BIPOC Affinity Group News

Dear BIPOC Families,

Gabby, Paola, and I have been having fun hanging out with students during the after-school BIPOC club. We have heard from two guest speakers so far. Kaen, a member of our own CSCS family, and Cay, a DJ and queer artist from Japan (who will be working with us until the end of the school year), shared their stories and artwork with us. Dr. Khalid White, a Black author from Oakland, CA, will join us via zoom for a Q&A on March 24th (this meeting is on a Friday from 12:30-1:30, instead of a Thursday). We encourage parents to come and be part of this.

We are excited for our April 6th club meeting. We will be taking a field trip. Our BIPOC affinity club will be taking the streetcar to PSU's Art Museum. Please see the permission slip here for more info. Unfortunately, without an RSVP and permission slip your student(s) will not be able to attend.

A Note from Katt, our Reading Intervention Specialist

Reading shaped my dreams, and more reading helped me make my dreams come true.
-Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Hello Cottonwood families! I am Katt, the Reading Intervention Specialist for K-3rd grades. I have been busy working to build up classroom libraries and a school ‘mobile’ library. (More to come on that soon!)

There are many ways this is happening, one such way is through book orders from Scholastic. At this time, brochures are sent home for 1st-5th grades. However, I can make it available for any child at any grade level, either with a physical brochure or online.

Please check in if you have financial barriers to bringing more books into your home, and we can talk about what we might be able to do to help.

Next week, I will be handing out brochures to students in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades. All orders will be due March 27th. If your child is not in one of those grades, but you would like to know more, please email me at Thank you!

New Groups for Students

Kristin has new groups starting after spring break!

Grief Group - for students who are impacted by any type of grief. Examples could include divorce, death of a loved one or a pet, or other family changes. We will discuss grief, coping skills, and hope.

Mindfulness Group - for students who want to practice mindfulness through mindful moments and practices, breathing techniques, and slowing down. This group will be mostly on walks outside.

Groups will be mixed age and take place during the school day, times determined by Kristin and their teacher once the groups are compiled. Groups start after spring break. Email to sign up your child. Thank you!
Got a Microwave?

Do you have a functional countertop microwave that you don't need aillustration of a broken microwave with wafting smokenymore? Our awesome 6th graders sure would appreciate you passing it along to them, as the one in their classroom broke this week. If you have one to donate, please respond to this email to work out the details.

Thank you!
