Greetings, Mill Hill families! 
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend Open House last Wednesday night. You got to hear Mr. Chase speak about the "F" word (no, not that F word! FUN!), watch the PTA movie debut (here is a link if you missed it - because of copyright issues we had to delete out the first background song, "With A Little Help From My Friends", by the Beatles. I suggest you hum along because it is more fun with the music!, see the wonderful slide show of first day of school pictures (if you missed it here is a link, and of course, spend some time in your child's classroom learning about the upcoming year.

Thursday was our big Walkathon Fundraiser kick-off, which commenced with a super-fun pep rally put on by our Walkathon committee. There was even a visit from Harley the Hawk. Your children were given ideas on ways to raise money to help support all the wonderful programs at Mill Hill. Walkathon pledge sheets and instructions went home with the students that day. This is our biggest fund raiser of the school year and 100% of the funds raised directly benefit our children. Thank you in advance to you and your children for doing all you can to help make this fundraiser a HUGE success! 

This coming Wednesday is our first PTA meeting of the school year. Please stop by for all or part of the meeting (don't worry if you are late or have to leave early). It is a great way to stay up-to-date on what is going on at Mill Hill, meet other parents and voice any questions, concerns, etc. that you may have. And don't forget...there is free coffee!!!

Registration begins Monday, September 19th at Noon!
Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a national, non-profit character development program that encourages pre-teen girls (grade 3-5) to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. The mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. GOTR at Mill Hill will be meeting on Wednesday afternoons 3:30-5:00 and Friday mornings 7:30-8:45, beginning September 28th. The program will run for ten weeks and will conclude with a 5K (3 mile) race in early December. For more information please go to (  Contact Alisa Ryan ( if you have questions.

This is the first general meeting of the year, and we encourage all available to attend to learn more about what is going on at Mill Hill. For those with the time and interest, this is also a great way to find out about various opportunities to get involved. Mr. Chase will be giving an update on some environmental concerns that were discussed at a meeting last spring, in addition to some other updates regarding our school building. There will also be updates given by Committee Chairs overseeing some of the upcoming programs and events. The next PTA general meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, October 11th from 2-3 pm in the APR.

Since its beginning, the Cub Scout program has provided fun and educational experiences for boys, with an emphasis on building character, improving physical fitness, teaching practical skills, and developing a spirit of community service.  Our Mill Hill Pack 98 is a great group of boys that get together throughout the year for fun and rewarding activities. Come learn more about what Cub Scouts has to offer at our annual Information and Sign-Up Session on Tuesday, September 27th from 7:00 to 8:00 pm in the APR (you can drop by anytime).  All boys in grades 1 through 5 are welcome to join and the fee for membership is $100. The Mill Hill School Walkathon campaign has officially started! This is the PRIMARY fundraiser for the PTA! Last year the Walkathon raised more than $29,000! Pledge forms went home with your children last week. The Mill Hill PTA has an annual operating budget of $34,000. There are 385 students in the school; that averages out to $88 per child. We are asking each student to try to raise at least $50. 100% of ALL money raised directly benefits your children. All donations forms and money from individuals must be turned in by October 7th to count toward prizes. Please contact Leigh Smith ( or Kim Fahey ( if you would like to volunteer for the event or have questions.  Volunteers are needed at 1:00 pm, walk starts at 1:30 pm.

There's still time to sign up for the Mill Hill PTA and confirm your MHS directory information.  A link was provided to families who still haven't confirmed their information in an email reminder from "Mill Hill School Directory" sent on 9/14/16. Click on the secure link and update your child's teacher assignment, confirm your family information for the MHS directory, and join the PTA for 2016-17.  If you didn't receive this, can't find it, or have any questions, please contact

The Mill Hill Chess program offers opportunities for beginner players to learn the fundamentals of chess play and more experienced players to enhance their chess skills in a welcoming and comfortable environment.  The game of chess is a lot of fun and fosters critical thinking, logic, creativity and good sportsmanship...and the Mill Hill Chess program offers a great opportunity for kids to build friendships outside of their class and grade. All classes are taught by DJA Chess Instruction.   
Learn to Play Chess Program - Kids new to the game of Chess will be taught the fundamentals of chess play, rules and etiquette.  This 6-week program will take place on THURSDAYS from 8 - 8:45 am in the Art Room beginning October 6th - and is open to all kids in Grades 1-5. Cost for the 6-week program is $60.
Mill Hill Chess Club - Open to kids in Grades 1-5 who have participated in the Learn To Play Chess Program - or who can demonstrate a basic knowledge of Chess Play.  Kids meet weekly on FRIDAY mornings from 8 - 8:45 am in the Art Room to learn more advanced techniques and strategy. The first 15-week session will begin September 30th.  Cost for the 15-week session is $120.

For every purchase you make, Mill Hill will share in a percentage of the A+ rewards that Stop and Shop donates to schools every year.

If you (or a grandparent) are interested in filling a shift once a month, every other week, or weekly, please contact Gayle Galatti, Mill Hill Library Volunteer Coordinator at The priority shifts that need coverage are M/T/Th 9-10 am or 10-11 am, Fridays 1:15 to 2:15 or 2:15 to 3:30. Kindergarten class shifts TBD. Flexible, non-priority shifts will also be available. 

Register now to be ready for early dismissal days in October! Kids Care is a State licensed before and after-school program which has been providing childcare in the Fairfield schools for the past 12 years.  Kids Care staff includes experienced and caring childcare professionals, all of whom are certified in CPR and first aid. The morning session begins at 7:30 am in the APR, and afternoon sessions are 3:25 to 6:00 pm in the APR. Tuition is $15 for the morning session and $20 for the afternoon. There are no minimum usage requirements. Just fill out the forms and pay the $50 registration fee and you can use the program as little or as much as you need. Reservations can be made the day before and will be confirmed by e-mail. Payment is due at the end of each week for days used. Enrollment forms can be obtained by contacting or on the PTA website at Registration for the early dismissal days must be received by October 14th to guarantee a reservation.

There are still a few open positions for the 2016-2017 school year. Below are some brief descriptions of the roles and the expected time commitment. Interested? Contact

1.  President Elect: Act as an aide to the Presidents, perform the duties of the Presidents in the absence or inability of those officers to serve.  Assist the Presidents in coordinating the work of the officers and Mill Hill PTA committees.  (The Elect also assumes the responsibilities of the President the following year.)
2.  Reflections Art Contest: Distribute info about the art contest to the Mill Hill community, collect entries and submit to Reflections. Late November through beginning of January.
3.  Wellness/Tools for Schools: Help ensure a healthy physical environment within our building.
4.  Advertising in the Mill Hill Directory: Help raise money for Mill Hill School by soliciting advertisements from Mill Hill family businesses and/or local businesses for our school directory.

We invite all Committee Chairs, Board Members, Faculty & Staff to submit Mill Hill newsworthy items to be included in future newsletters. All committee chairs must first send their newsletter submissions to their Vice President. Once approved by the VP, it can be submitted to the newsletter committee. Faculty & Staff submit Mr. Chase approved items. PTA Board members may submit directly to the newsletter at Submissions must be received by Thursday in order to be published in the Monday Message. As a gentle reminder, the mission of the newsletter is to promote Mill Hill based activities, events, important dates, and other Mill Hill related items.
