Dear <<First Name>>,
Here is what you need to know about news in United Methodist churches around the state, plus the continuing South Carolina United Methodist Flood Relief.

October Advocate now online

The October edition of the Advocate newspaper is online now. This month's edition commemorates one year since the flood, two UMCSC mission initiatives, the Bishop's Forward Focus Tour, the Pentecost Journey, the expanded UMCSC communications team, Summit on the Black Church and the usual lineup of local, district and conference news, here.

One year after the SC flood

It’s been one year since devastating floodwaters ravaged much of South Carolina, claiming 19 lives, breaching dams, closing roadways and displacing thousands of families. The United Methodist Church has been there through it all, but a year later, much work remains. Advocate Editor Jessica Brodie has the story in this month's edition, here.

SC helps after Louisiana flood

Billy Robinson writes about the great honor and privilege 14 members of the South Carolina United Methodist Volunteers in Mission Early Response Team experienced in their call to serve after the Louisiana flood. The ERT did a mission to homes in Baton Rouge Sept. 11-15. Read all about it in the October edition of the Advocate newspaper, here.

The 2016 Children’s summit will be held at Epworth Children’s Home located at 2900 Millwood Ave, Columbia, SC 29205 on October 15th, 2016 from 8:30am to 3:00pm.

The 3-fold purpose of the summit is given below:

  • To address the issues and needs of children, especially in South Carolina and identify ways that congregations can make an intentional difference through partnerships and advocacy
  • To provide some training for persons who work with children
  • To connect with the Pan-Methodist Campaign for Children in Poverty and participate as an outreach of Hood Seminary

Goal: To bring persons together across denominational lines who work with children and are willing to explore ways to make a difference in their lives.

The Summit Will:

  • Explore possibilities for future ministry to children across denominational lines in the state of South Carolina
  • Share examples of what congregations, districts and conferences are doing in the Pan-Methodist Campaign for Children in Poverty
  •  Provide workshops and resources to assist parents, grandparents and others in the process of nurturing children in a wholesome environment
