Welcome to 2015 and our first musical musings from the composing desk of Peter-Anthony Togni for the new year. The end of 2014 was quite exciting and we have a few updates for you. Please feel free to forward this email on to friends and help us spread the word on some great music making!!
Responsio - Nova Scotia Masterworks Award - Winner 2014
Peter-Anthony's composition, Responsio
, won the 2014 Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award which carries a cash value of $25,000. The award was presented at the Creative Nova Scotia Awards Gala in Halifax on November 20th, 2014. The fifty-minute musical work scored for solo bass clarinet and vocal quartet is built upon a pre-existing composition, Guillaume de Machaut's 1365 Mass
the Messe de Nostre Dame
. The work was selected from amoung five nominated works. "Responsio is a powerful and hauntingly beautiful composition that is truly deserving of the Masterworks title. Congratulations to Peter-Anthony Togni on this extraordinary achievement," said Lieutenant Governor His Honour Brigadier-General John James Grant. In January 2015, Luminous Voices with guest Jeff Reilly performed excerpts of the work in their Rapturous Renaissance concert.
Recent Musical Events
October 2014 brought the premiere of a new work, Warrior Songs,
for percussion and choir and written for percussionist Jerry Granelli. It made it's debut as part of a fundraising concert for Naropa, where Granelli was a founding faculty member, sung by the Ars Nova Singers, in Boulder Colorado.
Peter-Anthony was a visiting guest of the Tuckamore Festival
held in St. John's Newfoundland this fall.
Concerto for Saxaphone and Strings - Mike Murley
Peter-Anthony has completed his new work written for Mike Murley. The premiere took place in Ottawa on January 26th, 2015 with Thirteen Strings, followed by a performance in Toronto on February 22 with Orchestra Toronto, both under the direction of Kevin Mallon.

Oftrenes Premiere - Shattering the Silence
The Blue Engine String Quartet and Jeffrey Zeigler presented the world premiere of Peter-Anthony's Ofrenes
for solo cello and string quartet. This performance on February 4th was part of the 2015 Shattering the Silence
festival presented by the Acadia New Music Society in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. There are plans for the piece to be performed in New York this coming June.
Warrior Songs - Canadian Premiere
On March 6 2015, the Elmer Iseler Singers will perform Warrior Songs
in Toronto. A five movement concerto for improvised percussion and choir, it is a 75 minute epic! Commissioned and created for Halifax based Jerry Granelli, his brilliance as a jazz drummer and improvising percussionist will endeavour to bring the listener, in the words of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, to a state of “hereness”. Isis and Osiris - Gods of Egypt Opera Update
Plans are underway to hold a workshop production for this new Canadian opera with performances on May 6 and 8, 2015 at The Edward Jackman Centre, followed by a reception. Composer Peter-Anthony Togni and librettist Sharon Singer join VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert for this project that explores the birth of evil and tells one of the great love stories of all time. The workshop anticipates a world premier in May 2016 at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto.

Recordings in the works...
Look for a few new CD's for your musical collection coming soon. A recording of Responsio
will come out on the ATMA classique label in August 2015. Work is also underway on a CD of Peter-Anthony's various compositions for strings and voice in a project spearheaded by Stacie Dunlop
, and Sanctuary will be releasing their latest offering this year as well.
