National Volunteer Week 2021

April 18-24, 2021

The National Volunteer Week theme for 2021, The Value of One, The Power of Many, reflects on the awe-inspiring acts of kindness by millions of individuals AND the magic that happens when we work together towards a common purpose.  This past year, we have seen people supporting family, friends, neighbours, and strangers, people standing up to systemic racism, and people sharing insights on how to create a more just and equitable society.  We recognize the value of the caring and compassion that each one has shown another, and we recognize the power of people, organizations, and sectors working together.

ACP Honors our Volunteers this week and every week!

Why I volunteer with the ACP.
I moved to Peterborough following my retirement in 2018 and needed to find some activities! With an interest in spinning and weaving, I was thrilled to find the Artisans Centre Peterborough and the associated Peterborough Weavers and Spinners Guild. As someone who likes ‘to give back’ I decided it would be fun to volunteer on the reception desk for a half day weekly. Soon enough, the PWSG required a guild member to join the ACP Board of Directors so I volunteered for that. I love being able to use some of the skills, and bring some of the experiences of my previous working life, to assist at the ACP. It’s an opportunity to mingle with like-minded people, learn more about my own hobbies, and provide information to others who might want to learn a new skill or further develop one they already have.     Gillian Holden

My interest in 'making' started in childhood and continues to this day. I have 'sheep to shawled', quilted, potted and much more. All of these skills and techniques were learned and practised in many different places that were many miles apart. To be able to offer a variety of heritage activities with instructors who have the skills and experience to teach them, all available in one centre for everyone to participate in, is the mandate of the ACP. I have seen the difference that a creative centre can make in people's lives. It brings joy to one's life and that is why I support and continue to volunteer at the ACP.     June Goodwin
