March Break Events
ACP's March Break Crafts for Kids was a huge success! We offered two workshops, Learn to Weave and Make a Gourd Birdhouse. We had 15 kids participate across three days.

In the weaving workshop the kids learned that weaving is an ancient technique that persists to this very day. They used small card looms to make a tiny tapestry, weaving over and under the "warp" threads with a big needle, making stripes and shapes by linking their "weft" threads. The new terminology was very important!

Next they made Kumihimo bracelets. Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese braiding technique used to make cords and bands. The kids used a notched disk and layered threads in such a way to make a pattern. The finished bracelets resembled a two-toned candy cane twist.

And lastly the kids got to try table looms and put their new knowledge to more use. Realizing that what they were doing with their tapestry weaving could be accomplished much more quickly on a mechanical loom and with room for complexity in repeating patterns.

For the Gourd Birdhouse workshop they took hollow hard shell gourds, already with a bird sized hole drilled, and decorated them to make a fun and cozy home for the birds returning to their gardens this spring. Some came up with their own concepts, hand drawing and painting a themed design.  One participant incorporated the entrance hole into a porthole on a sailboat and created a seascape scene. Some chose a traditional house facade, painting windows, doors and roofs. And some took advantage of cutout stencils and sponge dabbers to create repeating motifs, like leaves, flowers, birds, and even dinosaurs!

Creativity was abound and everyone had a blast! We are looking forward to offering more activities for kids as summer approaches.
Volunteering with ACP

Hello Volunteers: Now that the ACP has reopened, with some restrictions, any of you who are interested in volunteering in some capacity would be most welcome. Our volunteer needs are a little different at this time, and responsibilities and tasks may have changed since you were last in the Artisans Centre. Please contact Gillian Holden volunteer@artisanscentre.ca to discuss how you would like to be involved. With any luck, restrictions will continue to lift and we will be able to welcome more volunteers back in various capacities. We are still very interested in adding volunteers to various operational committees that will work with the Board. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Keep well and stay warm!
