Canada Summer Jobs
Great news! Once again, the ACP has been granted funding to hire a Youth (aged 18-30) for several weeks over the summer. This person will assist in promotion of the ACP, its online and in-house galleries, classes, workshops and shows/sales.  Julia Szabo has a wide range of experience with computers and marketing, as well as in the arts.  She will be offering a number of child oriented classes on various market days over the rest of the summer.  Julia will assist in promotion of the ACP, its online and in-house galleries, classes, workshops and shows/sales.  Julia will be responsible for the reception area, providing information to potential members and participants. As well, she will work with instructors to prepare and implement classes, workshops and events for children, youth, families and seniors.
The ACP is grateful to the Federal Government of Canada for this opportunity.

Welcome Julia!!

ACP Honors our Volunteers

Heather Brooks

The ACP is supported by awe-inspiring volunteers; people that unselfishly commit themselves to seeing that the ACP continues to be a leader in teaching, supporting and advancing artisan skills and artists in Peterborough and surrounding area.  I had the pleasure of working with these dedicated volunteers as a Board Member of the ACP representing the Kawartha Potters Guild, and my time on the Board culminated with being the ACP secretary.  During my time on the Board, the ACP planned and undertook its move to the current location at the Peterborough Square, held the Creative Hands on Festival, partnered with service groups teaching woodturning skills to disadvantaged youth, held sessions with groups within the local arts community in an effort to support and promote the arts and held numerous sales including Artisanity. These are just a few of the many activities the ACP undertakes.

Sometimes, life redirects your path in a way you had not anticipated and as this has happened to me I have had to resign from the ACP.  My life is fuller for my time spent volunteering with the ACP and I am proud to have been a Board Member.    I encourage members of the ACP to take an active role in the activities and functioning of the ACP.  You will not regret any time spent helping this amazing organization achieve its goals!

It is with regret that we have accepted Heather’s resignation from the ACP Board and her role as Secretary, but are very thankful we have had the opportunity to work with Heather.  She has been a major contributor to ACP and its activities and made a difference.  We are a better organization because of Heather’s contributions to our work.  She will always be welcome at ACP.

Call for Volunteers!!
Now that we are open, we could use your help staffing the centre.

This opening will not be for scheduled classes, but just to get the doors open so people can see who we are and what we offer. We now have a Canada Summer Jobs Youth, Julia, who will be there some of the open hours. Members will be able to come in to use equipment and socialize, although the limit of people in the main room will be 6, and in the woodturning workshop, 2.

There is a Covid Safety Plan in place (on the reception desk), and it will be important to sign in at the front desk, do a COVID self-check, and leave a contact number in the event that we learn of any outbreaks. Masks are mandatory for anyone at the Artisans Centre, regardless of their role, for the time being.

It would be wonderful to have the Centre open to the public as many hours as possible, from 10 to 4, Monday through to Saturday. Previously, some of you covered our reception area during some of these shifts, and I would love to know who is interested in returning to do that now. I am creating a schedule for coverage and would be happy to put your name on a time slot! Remember that you don't have to commit to a shift every week, although that would be great. But you could pick alternate weeks if that works better. At this time we have the greatest need for coverage on Fridays and Saturdays.

During COVID, a couple of new people have come on board and have offered to take time slots. Please let me know as soon as you are able, what day and time would work best for you. If you can give me a couple of options, that will be great.

Thank you so very much for considering this and I look forward to seeing you at the Artisans Centre!

Volunteers Needed for a Fundraising Event
We have a good idea for a Pumpkin Carving Challenge and now we just need 3 or 4 volunteers to finalize the details and take care of this no more than 3 day event late October. If you and a friend would like to lend a hand to help the ACP and another community service organization, please email volunteer@artisanscentre.ca.

Did you know?

The Artisans Centre Peterborough could be just the beginning of a much bigger home for artists of all kinds.  Currently the organization is made up of the Gourders, Weavers and Spinners, Woodturners and Potters and shares space with the Creating Space group.  Talks continue with respect to becoming part of an even larger artist community.  Other cities have creativity centres, why not Peterborough?

WAX RESIST TECHNIQUE on GOURD

This is a great project for someone who doesn’t work with gourds but would like to try. The technique can be used on other surfaces as well. Learn to use a Kiska pen similar to a Pysanki pen to make wax resist designs on gourd. Wax resist is best for line or silhouette designs. You will choose your own colour of dye or stain. The wax will provide the final finish on the gourd.

Look for this for Aug 9 beginning at 11:00 am.

Please keep an eye on the Website for registration details.

Also coming this fall -
BEGINNER PYROGRAPHY

Are you looking for a way to enhance your gourd or wooden bowls?  Come and learn how adding simple designs with pyrography will add value and appeal to the most basic bowl.  You will burn a sampler design inside a border on your bowl, learning while burning what the different tips can do.
