Wacky Wednesday drop in sessions

Spring ARTISANity 2022 (April 22 & 23)

Our Spring ARTISANiy had a wide range of handmade items from 22 members of Artisans Centre Peterborough. Having ARTISANity outside our doors in the hall worked very well. With the sun coming down from the large skylight high above the sale, the tables were well lit. Many people stopped as they were passing by, admired the goods on display, with many also asking questions about the items that caught their attention. With the Artisans Centre also open during the sale, numerous people entered the Centre and had a tour, several showing interest in the variety of classes offered. They liked the idea that the equipment in the centre is available for use when they are qualified to use to it after taking courses.

Watch for the Fall ARTISANity with all of the Christmas gift ideas.

Fibre Arts Festival 2022 (May 14)

As anticipated, attendance was down this year; possibly due to the later date, the COVID situation or the great weather on Saturday. Despite that, many vendors commented that their sales were still comparable with the 2019 event at the Wellness Centre so those who attended, came to shop. We actually emptied the ATM!! Vendors also commented that they liked the venue, lots of space, good flow, lots of parking...

We've taken note of some issues and will up our game especially with respect to signage next time. A number of people commented that they could find the Peterborough Square, but not the entrance.

Looking forward to 2023.

Collaboration Corner

As you know, our Artisanity sales have received very positive comments about the arrangement of the items, boutique style. With this in mind it's time to take things to the next step. Some projects from one Guild can benefit greatly from input or additional contributions from one of the other guilds. For example:

Fabric bowls with pottery trivet inserts
Hand knit/woven shawls with hand turned buttons or Gourd art broaches

Do you have a project that would benefit from input from another guild? Send your requests to Newsletter@artisanscentre.ca and we'll try to get you in touch with the right guild for your need.

We have a number of Small Jobs for Volunteers

This summer we are offering classes to children on Tuesday afternoons. Can you spare an afternoon or two to help out? We are looking for an extra pair of hands to help the children as they move through their project of the day. If you have an idea of a project you would like to do with children, we would love to hear your suggestions. Contact Julia at admin@artisanscentre.ca or call 705-775-1797 if you can help out for an afternoon or two.
We are also looking for someone to lightly sand and repair two 3-shelf display stands.
We have a bigger job for two organizing type people. Our storage closet needs cleaning out and organizing. Call the Centre at 705-775-1797 if you would be willing to do this one-time job.
We are also looking for a vacuum cleaner. It may be old but still working. If you have replaced your vacuum lately and would like to donate your old one, please give Julia a call at 705-775-1797
If you have experience/familiarity with Health and Safety Committees or as a representative we would like your help setting up our inspection procedures..

Gourd Art

Beginner Gourd Art
Monday, May 30, 2022
10:30 am - 3:30 pm

In this class, you will learn to use both hand and power tools for opening and cleaning gourds. Basic safety of working with gourds and care of tools will be taught, so you will be able to use these tools on your own. You will sand and paint the inside of your gourd before using Adirondack dyes to give a colourful surface to the outside of your gourd. A glued leather rim will complete your gourd. Once you have completed this course you will be ready to apply a variety of techniques and express your creativity on a gourd. This class is a requirement for many other workshops in Gourd Art.

Tree Bark with Nesting Animal Gourd
Monday, Jun 13, 2022
10:00 am - 4:00 pm

In this class you will learn how to carve a gourd to look like a tree bark. You will be shown how to use your burs and wood burner to get this effect. You will have the choice of whether to put an owl/owlets or small baby animals into the carved opening in the bark. Acrylic washes/inks will be used to colour the bark and paint your nesting resident(s). A written tutorial and nestling pictures will be provided.
Some carving experience necessary.

Woodturning - Now with new equipment!!

The woodturning shop has now been equipped with new Rikon lathes, replacing those previously on loan from the Kawartha Woodturners Guild. During the transition to the new equipment we were able to maintain our class schedule and continue to look forward to welcoming students into the shop.

Natural Edge Bowl

This class will cover the basics of turning a natural edge bowl, including blank preparation, design considerations and turning basics.

Prerequisite: Basic Woodturning and demonstrated experience with a bowl gouge.

Turning a Peppermill
Thursday, May 26, 2022
1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This class will cover the basics of turning a peppermill from wood, including blank preparation, turning basics, finishing and assembly.

Basic Woodturning
4 Sessions
Tuesday, May 31, June 7, 14, 21, 2022
1:30 - 4:30 pm

This series of classes will cover the safe operation of a lathe including appropriate personal safety protection and sharpening techniques for turning tools. It will cover techniques for turning spindles, both simple and complex, basic bowl and basic platter turning.

Basic Pen Turning
Wednesday, June 1, 2022
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This class will cover the basics of turning pens from wood, including blank preparation, turning basics, finishing and assembly. Pens will include a standard Slimline pen and possible variations on the Slimline. Students will take home two completed pens.

Sharpening Woodturning Tools
Monday, June 13, 2022
1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

This class will cover the use of the One Way Wolverine system for sharpening woodturning tools. Included will be the use of the Varigrind attachment for gouges and the skew attachment. Students are encouraged to bring their own woodturning tools to sharpen in the class.

Fibre

Beginners Finger Weaving (Ceinture flechee)

The ceinture flechee, an "arrow sash" or commonly known as a "Voyager sash" is a traditional piece of French-Canadian clothing linked to the early 17th centrury.

Creating Space

Creating Space is back at the Artisans Centre in Peterborough Square. Thursdays at 3:30 are the drop-in family arts and crafts sessions and one or two Saturdays each month there is a free family craft activity (RSVP required for Saturdays). Our classes are open to any adult member of the community...AND...all members of our founding guilds are entitled to take courses at the reduced member rate. Individual memberships are available for $50/year (September to August) or $30/year for students. This fee enables you to also be a vendor at the Spring/Fall ARTISANity sales and to sell in the Online Artisans Market Peterborough.

By belonging to the ACP you benefit from collaboration with members from the other participating guilds and may find techniques within other mediums or from other mediums that will enrich your own experience.
