"When knowledge becomes rigid, it stops living." Anselm Kiefer

I hope this message finds you well.  First off, a big thank you to all those that came out to my open studio day at the beginning of February.  We had some really great conversations about the work that I've missed in my self imposed isolation.  It was nice to catch up with friends I hadn't seen in a while as well.  I am always happy to have people visit me at the studio so send me an email if you want to stop by.

This past month I've been spending a lot of time reviewing some of my past and prospective projects in an attempt to put together a solid game plan for 2014.  I will be committing a lot of time to expanding my "Taking a Seat..?: The Trans Canada Highway" photographic series and will be taking a lot of photos across central and western Canada this spring and summer. The ultimate goal of this project is to produce a book and limited edition prints to be released in 2015.

Another project is a body of work inspired by the "Echoes of Impact..?" piece.  I will be working on a series of aluminum based pieces as a series under the same name. More info later in the Newsletter.

Ultimately 2014 has had a great start for me and I will be looking forward to sharing some new work by the end of the summer.  There are also a lot of exciting things happening in Calgary this year such as the Nuit Blanche Calgary 2014 where I am the Event Manager, the launch of Contemporary Calgary and the re-purposing of the old Calgary Science Centre/Planetarium as well as some awe-inspiring art being produced by artists here in Calgary. And, plans are underway for a follow up show to Open Concept that will probably take place this Fall, but I'm not telling you where. Yet.  I'll be sure to keep you posted.

If you enjoy my work and/or my Newsletter be sure to share this via Facebook or email :)

The Corrosion of Time..?
This piece loves and relies on the natural elements to be brought to life and this winter has definitely given this piece what it is asking for.  The wind, snow and ice have just activated this piece in ways that I could only have hoped for.  Its provided me with a peaceful retreat behind the studio.  I've even enjoyed watering the trees and watching the ice instantly freeze and create a beautiful cascade of ice that flows down each tree that there corroding concrete pedestals.

Project Sketches: Echoes of Impact..?
These are just some of the ideas I have been putting on paper for the Echoes of Impact project.  The project has come from an interest and need to create aggressive cavities in the aluminum surfaces of the my work. This was inspired through learning and thinking about how our minds work and wanting to create an abstracted representation of an how certain events have a significant impact on our mind, perspectives or psyche.  The most effective way of creating these kind of "cavities" in my work has involved using fire arms such as rifles and shot guns.  In the creation of the piece Echoes of Impact..? that had inspired this project/body of work, I worked with members of the Calgary Shooting Centre because I have no experience with fire arms (or a license for that matter).  They were very excited and enthusiastic to work with an artist on a unique project and were generously supportive.  From the experience of creating this initial piece I have been inspired to explore this interest, concept and processes of "drawing/sculpting" a lot further and plan to have the results of this project for show after the summer.
