What's new in Kris's world..?

Hello! I hope this message finds you well!  Here in Calgary we are starting to move to some actual and much deserved Spring weather after such a long and cold winter. On March 20th I celebrated my 31st Birthday! "Another year in the bag" as I like to say. I don't mind getting older (yet), despite some dark periods, I am happy with the life I've lived so far, to be alive and to have so many great friends and loving and supportive family for which I am ever thankful.
This issue I wanted to mention just a couple things that are happening outside of the studio.  I have been invited to participate in a panel talk at the Umbrella Visual Arts Conference and Lewis Liski has made his debut documentary Alternative Currency available to the public, a film I was very fortunate to have been included in. More info below!

Be sure to check out my website or even send me an email to let me know what you've thought about my newsletter so far.

Whats New for April 2014

Umbrella  Visual Arts Conference, April 12, 10AM-6PM

This coming weekend I will be a part of a panel talk from 11AM to 12PM discussing Economic Stability For Artists at the Umbrella Arts Conference being presented by the Elephant Artists Relief Society and Untitled Contemporary Art along side a great panel of other community members. This is a free event that is taking place at the Cliff Bungalow Arts Centre, 2105 Cliff St SW.

"With the aim of mirroring the concerns of Calgary’s visual art communities, UMBRELLA will bring important and relevant issues to the forefront of the conversation and provide a forum for their discussion. UMBRELLA provides an opportunity to address issues that are specific to our communities through a democratic environment that is inclusive and safe; as an open invitation to everyone in the city who engages with and is impacted by the visual arts. UMBRELLA aspires to engage all corners of the Calgary arts community by bringing together voices from diverse groups and organizations throughout Calgary." (As stated on

Alternative Currency
Directed & Produced By Lewis Liski

Recently released to the public on vimeo, Alternative Currency premiered at the Moving Images & Sound Collective film festival in 2013 and is a documentary film Directed and Produced by Lewis Liski that explores the visual art scene in Calgary in 2012 during the city's year as the Cultural Capital of Canada.  Along with amazing interviews with some important figures within the Calgary visual arts community, this documentary also captures the perspectives and preparation of five early career artists about to graduate from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2012 as they put their practices and futures into perspective.  I had the amazing experience of being one of the five artists included in this project along side Jesse Stilwell, Ashley Ohman, Natasha Alphonse & Dan Zimmerman.

Be sure to take an evening to watch Lewis's debut film project, truly a unique glimpse into a complex world.
