Organic Movement
Bothmer Autumn Conference 23 - 25 October 2020
in the Waldorf School Märkisches Viertel, Berlin
with Martin Baker and Stephan Thilo

What is organic movement and how can we use this principle in our work and in our life?

We are using the word organic to describe something that is in keeping with our being. It is used to describe something constructive, healthy and in our case, using the body in a positive way. Perhaps we choose to eat organic food; food which is grown in such a way as to be closer to its natural existence. Accordingly, with organic movement we try to get closer to a natural movement that is most likely to generate health and helps us to move in accordance with our body. We suggest we can learn to move more organically by examining the qualities and movements of the four bodies and thus understand what is natural, harmonious and healthy.

With interlaced talks, movement practice and opportunities for shared ideas we will work through the following themes:

Physical anatomy restricts and frees us to move in particular ways. If we repeatedly use the body in a way it is not designed for or overtrain it, problems develop. If we underuse it, other problems can occur. What are the restrictions and what can we deduct from its structural principles?

The surrounding rhythms of life and breath, physiology and the flow of our environment, is something we consciously try to practice with/in Bothmer exercises. When these things are missing from a movement we can feel the lack of ease and stiffening of the body. There is a kind of invisible movement - time – architecture, in which the physical body sits. So what kind of exercise is beneficial to this body?

The character of movement is recognisable. Not only can we recognise when a movement is fast, slow, rhythmic or accurate but, but we also “see”  when it is colourful, attractive and meaningful and can recognise when inner soul shines through.
The nature of the planets is a good springboard to recognising and analysing these qualities. Movements have context and implications to the individual and the world.

What is the intention of a movement and where does this intention come from? Our destiny is connected to the decisions we make, to which path and direction we take. Can we develop more awareness to our destiny?
