Prayer Update for the Mission Works
of the Presbytery of Southern California

February 2019

Update from around the Presbytery

As mentioned in the January issue of the Grapevine, I will be alternating months, sharing prayer requests for one particular work and then the next month requests for the 7 works in general. Here's what I have for February:
1. From Pasadena OPC
Church Planter Matt Cotta writes:

  • "We long to see adult baptisms.  Please pray that Pastor Cotta and the rest of the congregation will both seek out and take advantage of every opportunity to interact with our unbelieving family members, neighbors, co-workers, schoolmates, and strangers.  At the same time, praise God with us for the visitors He has been bringing every week with or without our instrumentality." (RHM's note: The Sunday before last, Matt invited the General Secretary of our Committee on Home Missions and Church Extension (CHMCE), Rev. John Shaw to preach to our congregation and present the work of the OPC in church planting after worship. We had a record turnout that Sunday of over 80 people!

2. From Yuma OPC
Church planter Jeremy Baker writes:

  • "Praise the Lord for the energy our winter visitors have brought us!  Please pray that more 'year round' Yuma families would come and visit." (RHM's note: Our dear friends from Canada, Michigan and the Dakotas, who visit during the winter months, joined us en masse yesterday, and our church was full!)

  • Also, Pastor Jeremy and the congregation give thanks to God for the much needed new chairs provided by the PSC.

3. From Pilgrim OPC
(While not a mission work, one of our newest churches, Pilgrim Presbyterian, is in need of a larger facility.)
Pastor Ben Rochester writes:

  • "Please pray that the Lord would help us determine as we choose between two larger meeting locations that are available to rent." (See picture below of one of the two possibilities in Lakeside, CA - 6 miles north of their current location.)

  • Also, pray for God's blessing on new members soon to join Pilgrim OPC."

4. For Corona OPC

Please pray for the members of Corona Presbyterian. Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Matt Prather. But wonderfully, in God's providence, Andrew Canavan, a licentiate of our presbytery and already a member at CPC, was asked to carry on the work and he accepted. The church is very grateful for Andrew and his gifts. Please pray:
  • as he assumes the responsibilities of preaching, teaching, preparing all of the details of a Sunday worship service.
  • as he studies for his ordination exams. Pray for his committee exam on April 6th.
  • for he and his wife, Rebekah, as they settle into their new place. They had to move suddenly when the owner of the last house they rented told them of his intention to sell the house. But the Lord provided, and men from two of our mission works helped with the moving of furniture.
  • And, mostly, pray for the great blessing of their new baby boy, Ansel Isaac, born just three weeks ago! Yes, the Canavans could use our prayers! :-)
Thanks for supporting our mission works in prayer,
RHM Dave Crum
