An Important Message From Bishop Reed

September 6, 2019

Dear Friends in Christ,

I have very important news to share with you concerning the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. On Tuesday, the Rt. Rev. Jennifer Brooke-Davidson, our Bishop Suffragan informed me that, after deep and prayerful discernment, she has accepted a call to serve as Assistant Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. She will begin her new ministry in mid-October. Her letter to you is attached below.

I am sure that this news comes to you as a great surprise, as it did to me. While I am having hard conversations with the Lord, I know that Bishop Brooke-Davidson did not reach this decision easily or lightly and has accepted this new call only after much prayer. I know well her love for the Lord, her passion for the Gospel, and her gifts for ministry. I am thankful for her partnership and support, and I will miss that, even as our friendship continues.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will work to make sure that the work she has been leading and the ministries she oversees are sustained.

Next week, I will begin working to ensure, so far as is possible, that regular Sunday Episcopal visitations continue as scheduled. On Thursday, September 12, I will meet with the Standing Committee and Chancellor to begin planning the next steps and discussing options regarding the call, on an interim basis, of a second bishop following Bishop Jennifer's departure. I have been in contact with the Presiding Bishop's office to seek counsel moving forward and will continue to do so.

I will keep you informed, as developments occur, and plan to send my next communication by Tuesday, October 1.

We are blessed with a strong, committed diocesan staff who remain fully available to support you and your congregations as you "walk in love, as Christ loved us," day by day. The diocesan office will continue its search for the Executive Assistant to the Bishop Suffragan, in order to support diocesan ministries, congregations, and staff. We will continue walking together, trusting in the goodness of the Lord who takes endings and makes beginnings.

I ask that you pray for Bishop Jennifer and Carrick as they say their goodbyes and move toward this new call in Virginia. I ask that you pray for the Diocese and diocesan staff. And, as always, I am grateful for your prayers for Patti and me. I humbly ask that in the days ahead, you pray that I may be given grace, wisdom, and perseverance.

I am blessed to be your brother and thankful to serve as your bishop, and I remain,

Faithfully yours in Christ,

David M. Reed
Bishop of West Texas
