Donation of Shoes!

Over 200 shoes were donated to the Val Verde Border Humanitarian Coalition
Thanks to the generous donations received for the Border Patrol/Migrant Ministry, we were able to provide over 200 pairs of shoes to the Val Verde Border Humanitarian Coalition in Del Rio. These shoes were ordered online from a wishlist that they had compiled of their most needed items. Within an hour of the VVBHC receiving the notification of our gift of shoes, we received the following comment back to us via email.

Thank you to all who made this gift of shoes possible. - Laura Downing

What Happened on Connection Sunday?

We connected and reconnected and it was a great day.
We prayed, sang, cried, dreamed, swooned over the singing children, shared communion, talked, listened, and ate, but mostly we connected, with God, each other, and ourselves. Did you know that there were 137 people at the 10:30 service that day? And 21 at 8:00? Old connections were renewed and new connections were made. What if we came together like that every Sunday? How might your life be changed and how might you be a part of changing the lives of others?

We celebrated the opportunities to connect - study and classes, worship, ministries within the parish, and outreach to others. And we learned some new math: n (n-1)/2 = the number of potential connections. So if 125 gather there are 7,750 potential connections.

Thank you to everyone who was there - at 8:00, 10:30, or the lunch. Your presence made a difference. Without you we would have been less than we were, not just in numbers but in our way of being and connecting with each other. Thank you to all who helped with decorating, cooking, serving, organizing, speaking, cleaning up; serving at the liturgy; or helping with the children's choir. It truly was a feast day in which we were fed in body and soul and it could not have happened without you. Thank you.

If you missed Connection Sunday but would like to know more about ministry opportunities, please contact me anytime! I would love to tell you about all the connection opportunities we have here at St. Philip's. Check out the photos on our Facebook page.

Thank you again for coming, participating, helping, and most importantly CONNECTING!

Blessings - Cyndy Marsh

Volunteers Needed for UCISD's Chain Reaction

Replacing Bullying and Violence with Kindness and Respect.
For the 2nd year UCISD is doing its part to help create a school climate less susceptible to harassment, bullying, and violence by offering a three day program called Chain Reaction for all freshman students. This program is a part of Rachel's Challenge and is designed to draw students together, break down barriers and influence students to make changes. Students respond to the day's challenges with self-reflection and the acknowledgement of personal responsibility.

This program relies on volunteers from the community to help facilitate the three-day event, which will be held at the Fairplex on October 1, 2, and 3. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Beverly Heyen or the church office.

In order to volunteer you must:
  • attend a UCISD volunteer orientation,
  • be able to commit to a full day, 8:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.,
(Note: you do not have to commit to all three days.)
  • and you must be willing to participate in mild physical activities with the students.
UCISD orientation dates are Sept. 18 at Noon or 6:00 p.m., or Sept. 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the UCISD District Office. Click here to learn more about Rachel's Challenge.  - Beverly Heyen

Pet Blessings Move to Bark in the Park!

Love is a four legged word!

St. Philip’s will participate in our 2nd Annual Pet Blessing at Bark in the Park on October 5 at Memorial Park. Opening ceremonies will start at 9:00 a.m. and the blessing of pets will begin immediately after and continue until noon. Bring your pets and your family and join us, along with the Humane Society, in a day to celebrate and honor our four legged friends. There will be vendors, costumes, contests, and of course pets.

Last year, we estimate that over 75 pets were blessed. It’s wonderful to see such a blessed event expand out into the community and we hope to attract even more pets this year.  Hope to see you there. - Kelley Kimble
