1. Help friends and family give to effective organizations
Many people want to do good but don’t know where to start or which charities they can trust with their donations. You can help introduce your network to the principles of effective giving by sending them links to our free celebrity-read audiobook, our curated list of effective charities and our impact calculator.
2. Join our crowd fundraiser! The first US$30,000 pledged will be matched
Join us next Monday to generate support for three of our recommended charities: Sanku Project Healthy Children, The Fred Hollows Foundation and GiveDirectly. On the night, get comfy in front of your computer as we listen to these three pioneering organizations share stories about their evidence-based, cost-effective, and high-impact work. The presentations will be followed by a live-pledging session, which we hope will inspire a shared sense of purpose for all involved.
3. Get free philanthropy advice
Are you considering a donation of US$5,000 or more but have questions before making your final decision? Get in touch with our Executive Director, Charlie Bresler, or Managing Director, Rickard Vikstrom, for assistance with developing and executing your philanthropic goals. Charlie and Rickard can connect you with charity CEOs, help identify specific projects to fund and assist with reporting on the life-changing impact of your donation.
Schedule a call with Rickard or email Charlie.
4. Multiply the impact of your donation with our 90/10 Fund
Our new 90/10 Fund provides an opportunity to multiply the impact of your donation and support both The Life You Can Save itself and all of our recommended charities at the same time. With this donation option, 90% of your donation will go to our All Charities fund, where it will be distributed equally among our recommended charities, and 10% will go to The Life You Can Save itself so that we can continue to spread the idea of effective giving widely, share Peter Singer’s book The Life You Can Save with more people, and raise even more funds for our recommended charities. Historically, every US$1 that was donated to The Life You Can Save itself has helped us generate roughly US$11.50 for our recommended charities.
5. Learn About DAFs, Stock Donations and Gifts in Wills
Donor Advised Funds (DAFs), stock donations and gifts in wills can help your donation go further. With a background in Financial Planning, our team expert Angela is volunteering her time to assist with any technical questions you may have about these donation methods. Email Angela or schedule a call to find out more. Alternatively, you can use our DAF widget to donate through your DAF; or use our Stock Donation Information request form to start the process of donating stock; or visit our partner FreeWill to create a will for free.
6. Maximize COVID IRA deductions
While it is always important to consult a tax advisor before making any tax decisions, please be aware that, in response to COVID-19, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has introduced some additional tax benefits for charitable contributions this year. For instance, even if you do not elect to itemize your deductions for 2020, you will still be allowed an additional $300 tax deduction for charitable contributions on top of your “standard” deduction. Also keep in mind that, as always, taxpayers age 70 ½ or older can make a qualified charitable distribution from their IRA — up to $100,000 — directly to any eligible charity. For more information about these and other tax policies, see this information page from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
