Issue 1. 2019

Message from the President - Gillian Shaw

Welcome to our first edition of 'The Huddle' – a new way that Canberra Netball Association (CNA) would like to connect with all its members.  This newsletter is for the purpose of keeping our members up to date with what is going on in netball at our local grass roots level.  We welcome feedback and input into how we may improve this going forward.

Did you know that CNA has over 1,960 members?  Our membership comes through our 18 affiliated clubs.   With our sister Association, Belconnen Netball Association, we deliver the NCNC – which is the largest netball competition in Canberra, with 290 teams.  Running a competition of this size however is a huge task and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers who work so hard to make this competition happen every Saturday morning during winter.

CNA has some exciting things going on at the moment – I urge you to keep reading this newsletter to find out more.

Q&A with CNA
Our first 'Q&A with CNA' is with the amazing Tara Steel, Head Coach for CNA.

How long have you been coaching for?  My first coaching experience was as a 15 year old at Shoalhaven Netball Association. I joined CNA as a Division 1 player in 2010, and then took over the head coach role in 2014 and have been involved in ACT programs throughout that time also.

What is your most memorable moment you have experienced in your coaching role at CNA?

There have been a few, the most obvious is the recent Premiership and undefeated season this year. But I would have to say the other time I really recall is the first Grand Final we played in 3 years ago, and it was a goal for goal battle with TNA, who were looking for a 3rd straight premiership. We lost that in the final minute with a heartbreaking 2 goal loss, but the way our team stood tall, and stayed connected was one of the most important things for me as a coach.

Success to me isn't about premierships, its about the journey and what we can achieve and how we grow along the way.

Why did you choose to become a coach?
I've always loved the strategy of the game, and always enjoyed leading and working with people. So when I was younger it was about putting back and helping others, and as I've continued along the pathway its been about helping others be the best they can be, and providing a fun and challenging experience along the way.

If you could live in a book, movie or TV show, what would it be?  This is a tough one. I love challenges and games, so I'd have to say a game show like Ninja warrior, or survivor. Or for the 90's kids out there I always loved "It's a knockout" that looked like so much fun.

What animal best represents you and why?  A leopard - they are the smallest of the big cats, but can run fast and jump high, and they can blend easily into various environments. They can seem unassuming but also strike prey when they need to.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and how would you use it?  Teleportation  as it would be a very time effecicent and cheap way to travel the world.

What are you most grateful for?  The people around me that make my role at CNA so enjoyable. I've made lifelong friends from my involvement in netball, and its great that you can share a journey and connect with people, and go separate ways in life and still remain connected.

Thank you Tara.  We are very much looking forward to another successful season next year!
