On September 4th, 1908, Author Richard Wright was born in Roxie, Mississippi.  He came from a family of sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South. He graduated from Smith Robertson Junior High School in Mississippi as valedictorian of the class of 1923. Wright would go on to write about racial discrimination and the plight of African-Americans during the 19th and 20th centuries... Enter Here

On September 5th, 1916, Frank Yerby was born in Augusta, Georgia. He was an African American author of popular historical fiction. Yerby's story, "Health Card," won the O.
