Survival During Triggering Times

It is as if my past has caught up with me: Deserted streets. Food lines. Curfews. Yes, I feel like my past has finally reared its ugly head on American soil. 

I have been struggling daily since I returned from the war in Iraq 17 years ago. Secretly, I call these experiences “Living in a Triggering Town.” It’s the constant pressure of surviving. 

Some of us have been struggling from catastrophe to catastrophe all our lives. Is this any different? Yes. Because, unlike any other catastrophe we’ve faced alone, we are all in this together. Needing each other, loving each other, getting on each other’s nerves, wishing we were alone, and, like me, wishing to be around each other again, for no special occasion other than to be together. READ MORE

Support for Parents Affected by Domestic Violence
During this time of quarantine, domestic violence has increased and some parents are feeling helpless. Safe Chat supports victims and those affected through a private online chat with a client advocate who can provide resources and referrals.

Information on the NYC Child Welfare System During COVID-19
Your case may have been impacted by the pandemic, leaving you with a lot of unanswered questions. You can contact your attorney, who does not work for ACS. This resource provides information about ACS operations during this crisis and contact information for the ACS helpline.

Rise Stories for Parents Under Stress As parents under stress, it can be hard to remember that our children can cope better if they have time to play, connect and snuggle with us. These stories from Rise show how parents have coped with stress and offer information about combating stress as parents. 

Meeting Your Family's Basic Needs in NYC: This extensive list of community resources and mutual aid groups in New York City can help with a variety of concerns.

Your Rights at Work During This Crisis: If you are a New York City employee and have lost benefits at your workplace such as sick leave and disability benefits due to COVID-19, you can file a complaint. You are still entitled to your benefits in this time of crisis
 
NYC Resources for Unemployment: Many parents have been laid off during this time. NYC government has developed a list of resources for those who are unemployed, including food assistance, financial assistance and emotional support.
Rise Parent-Led Video Support Groups for NYC Families - Today and Friday



Rise is hosting bi-weekly parent-led support groups - by video - for NYC parents impacted by child welfare and coronavirus. 

Wednesdays 5-6pm, for parents with children at home
Fridays 11-12pm, for parents separated from their children

Rise also is gathering information to learn about parent’s concerns and needs related to the coronavirus shutdown so that we can advocate for impacted parents. PARENTS: Please take our survey today!
