Festival 2018

Bookings for Festival 2018 are going well and as of 16 May, 300 places have been booked, 8 of the 27 walks are sold out and a number of others are over 50% full.

We have been asked if it is possible to increase capacity on some of the walks. As a general rule the answer is no - we have set a capacity for each walk that takes account of the grading and length of the walk.  In addition many of the walks are accompanied by an "expert" and if the numbers are too large, it can be difficult to ensure everybody can hear what is said.

If you find that your favourite walk is already full don't despair.  Although all Friday walks are fully booked, there are still a wide range of walks available on the Saturday and Sunday - whether you want to walk 1.5 or 20 miles.  Examples of the walks available are:
  • SAT11 - Children's Treasure Hunt.  A fun self guided hunt encouraging children to discover Corsham.  This free walk is suitable for 5-12 year olds accompanied by an adult.  Please book the children in advance - there is no need to book a place for the accompanying adult.
  • SAT12/Sun12 - Peacock Walk.  A local self guided walk for teams of 2 - 4 to solve a peacock "centric" quiz.  This is another free walk and should be a bit of fun for all the family; if you are lucky you might see some real Peacocks!
  • SUN1 - Climbing Up on Solsbury Hill.  A demanding 20 mile long circular walk to Little Solsbury passing through diverse and beautiful countryside with impressive hilltop views.
And if you have any energy left, don't forget the Quiz and Buffet Supper on Saturday evening in the Springfield Campus.  You don't need to be a walker to attend - simply get together with a few friends to form a team (maximum 6 in a team) for a fun quiz and delicious buffet.  Our quiz master has been in a darkened room with a towel around his head for the last couple of months and is now waiting to unleash his latest creation upon us all!  Even if you don't win the Golden Boots you can be sure of a fun evening. After the last minute hiccup last year, I am assured there will be a paying bar available this year - serving beer, wine and soft drinks.  Dietary needs can be catered for - please let us know when booking.

The full detail of the Festival programme is available on the Corsham Walking Festival website and this is the easiest way to book tickets for the walks and the Saturday evening Quiz and Buffet.  Alternatively y
ou can book via The Pound Arts Centre (Tel 01249 701628) during normal box office hours.  A reminder that all methods of booking will close at 1400 the day before the relevant walk to allow time for lists of walkers to be printed for the following day.  Bookings for the Quiz and Buffet Supper will close a week beforehand (ie 2 June 2018) so that we can confirm numbers for the catering.

Finally, I am still seeking some volunteers to help man the Festival HQ for a couple of hours on the Saturday and (particularly) the Sunday.  If you can help, please get in touch.

Walking Opportunities

The Corsham area provides walking opportunities all year round - whether self guided or with a local group.  The Corsham Bookshop and the Tourist Information Centre in Corsham High Street both have a small selection of booklets of local walks available for purchase and in addition there are a number of on line resources.

A number of national and local groups walk regularly in Corsham and the surrounding area and welcome new walkers.  If you do not walk regularly with the relevant group, it is advisable to contact them beforehand so they are aware of likely numbers on the walk.  More information - including contact details - can be found on the Corsham Walking Festival website or downloaded here

Walkers Are Welcome

The Walkers are Welcome update for April is an environment special.  Among items of general interest, there are links to a couple of appeals/petitions that you may care to support.

Hope to see you on a walk in the Corsham area soon.
