Welcome New Board Members
Negarra Kudumu is a graduate of Dartmouth College and holds a graduate degree from Leiden University, The Netherlands. Originally from Chicago, she lived in Europe and New York City before coming to Seattle in 2014 to accept the Artist-In-Residence role at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. In October 2014, she accepted her current position of Educator at The Frye Art Museum, managing adult programs and adult education. Negarra is in charge of the mastercopy painting program at the Frye.

Julie Mackoff is a Seattle native, graduate of Garfield High School, The University of Washington and University of Puget Sound School of Law (now Seattle University School of Law). She absorbed her parents’ appreciation of art from an early age and particularly loves figurative paintings and drawings as well as landscapes. Before entering law school, she studied drawing and painting at an atelier in France. She started her law career 38 years ago with a Seattle firm, then moved to San Francisco to work at a “boutique” labor law firm, then joined Transamerica Life Insurance Company as an employment attorney. She lives on a farm in picturesque Snohomish. Julie recently retired from law and looks now forward to resuming her art studies.

Members, remember to regularly update your websites!
The individual websites of our members is part of PSG’s public image. Members, please update your website with images of your latest work! You are part of our networking and public image.  Prospective members often look at the websites of current PSG members in deciding whether to join PSG.

Dues
Treasurer Gary Gumble is testing various software that would allow PSG to accept monthly installment payments for dues. We are hoping to add this feature as soon as possible, to make membership more accessible to artists.

Board Oversight
The board has a legal duty to oversee and periodically review the progress of its committees. The board has just completed a lengthy review of the Membership Committee and received great suggestions from the jury panel as to how PSG can improve its membership application process. Details will be published in next month’s newsletter.

The board will also review the Financial Committee, to ensure PSG is following best accounting practices regarding its bank accounts. PSG will soon be losing Treasurer Gary Gumble to world travel, so we are looking for someone to fill his role. If you know of anyone with a knowledge of accounting practices and a desire to help the arts (need not be an artist) please let me know. We are in discussions with EAFA about the possibility of jointly hiring a bookkeeper to manage our accounting needs, but we will still need a Treasurer.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Summer Picnic on Saturday, July 23!

Warmest,

Patricia Halsell
PSG President 2016

Member News

Steve Hu

PSG member Steve Hu's painting "Chasing the Wind" has been awarded "Honorable Mention" at the EAFA 2016 Juried Open Show, same painting also won an award in the 21st Maritime Exhibition at Coos Art Museum, Oregon in 2014.

In addition, "Purity" another painting by Steve Hu won the "People's Choice" award at the EAFA juried show presently showing at the Mercer Island Community Center Gallery. June 6 through July 22, 2016.

Paul Daneker

Alongside a solid contingent of PSG senior members such as Austin Dwyer, Harold Johnson, Frank Gaffney and Charles Fawcett, PSG Signature Artist Paul Daneker has again been juried into the prestigious American Society of Marine Art affiliated Coos Maritime Art Exhibition, held at the Coos Art Museum in Coos Bay, OR from July - September 2016.

The piece to be featured is Paul's stunning pre-christening portrait of Washington State's then newest super ferry, the Samish.  Paul prepared the studies for the final painting standing alone on the Anacortes beach adjoining the deserted vessel, and in anticipation of soon to arrive crew and laborers; empty of all visible activity save reflection of the May 2015 sunrise over Mt. Baker, WA and Bellingham Bay.
The painting is oil on linen, and measures 18x24 inches, unframed.

Paul was recently honored with an honorable mention conferred at the Fred Oldfield Invitation Art Exhibition.  His honored piece was the portrait of a member of one of the U.S. First Nations, and proud veteran of the United States military.  Simply referred to as Indian Lloyd, his wise and determined features bespeak of his real identity as one of the proud and contemporary people of the Lakota nation.
The oil on linen panel is 14x11 inches.

Finally, Paul and a fellow Pacific Northwest artist, Ken Hurley of Raymond, will soon head to sunbaked grassy hills of the Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana where they will begin studies for a series of historic images focusing not so much on the events of June 26, 1876, but rather to focus on the special role that place served in the lives of those who knew the area as "Greasy Grass."

Frank Gaffney

Frank Gaffney will have nine paintings in four juried exhibitions. Most are marine art but had three of his figurative paintings accepted into The Kenmore Art Show.

Frank's painting for this years Coast Guard Art Program will be on exhibition at the Salmagundi Club, New York and will run from July 2 through July 15 before moving on to other venues. This Frank's eight painting accepted into this program. His painting depicts the Members of the Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team, based in Chesapeake, Va., lower a Coast Guard dog to the Cutter Frank Drew during vertical insertion training in the Chesapeake Bay, Oct. 3, 2014. Coast Guard members train to board a wide variety of vessels in preparation for any scenario.
