UCPL to host online documentary screening & discussion with co-producer Oct. 19

On Wednesday, Oct. 19, University City Public Library will host an online screening of the documentary, In the Executioner’s Shadow, followed by a discussion with the film’s co-producer, Rick Stack. The free event begins at 7 p.m. and is open to all.
Released in 2018, In the Executioner’s Shadow explores justice, injustice, and the death penalty through three interweaving personal narratives — a former state executioner who nearly executes an innocent person; a Boston Marathon bombing victim who struggles to decide what justice really means; and the parents of a murder victim who face abandoning their values or fighting for the life of their daughter’s killer. The documentary is 40 minutes long and is unrated.
The online screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s co-producer, University City native Rick Stack. A graduate of University City High School, Mr. Stack is an author, professor, and activist dedicated to social justice, with a focus on those impacted by the death penalty. He will be joined in the discussion by Elyse Max, executive director of Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, who will offer an update on the state of death penalty cases in Missouri.
This online program is free and open to all. Email reference@ucitylibrary.org to receive an email invitation to the Zoom event. The program will also be live-streamed to UCPL’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Renovation updates: walls, wiring, and HVAC going in now

After some unexpected electrical issues due to this summer's flooding, construction at our permanent location is chugging right along. Our contractor, Rainieri Construction, has most walls framed out and is working on putting in new wiring, plumbing, and HVAC ductwork for our new and renovated spaces. In the photos above, you'll see: (top) a re-imagined gallery area that will better incorporate the art into the Library; (middle left) the sidewalk on the parking lot side of the building, which has been torn up to accommodate new sewer lines; (middle right) progress being made in the new technology makerspace; and (bottom) the entrance to the reconfigured first floor bathrooms.
Construction is still on track to finish in March 2023, and we look forward to welcoming the community back to 6701 Delmar soon after! Visit the renovation page on our website for more updates and images.

Book clubs for kids return in October

UCPL's Youth Services department is excited to bring back our Treehouse and Show Me book clubs for kids this month! Led by Ms. C and Ms. Shri, the Treehouse Book Club for 4th-6th graders meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month via Zoom. Registration is required for these programs, and readers should read the assigned book prior to the discussions. The October book is The Blackbird Girls by Anne Blankman. If your reader is interested in joining the Treehouse Book Club, call the Youth Services department at 314-727-3150 or email youthservices@ucitylibrary.org.
Geared toward second and third-graders, the Show Me Book Club features monthly videos of Ms. Stephanie reading one or two nominees for the Show Me Award, an annual prize for picture books that is selected by Missouri children. Videos will be uploaded to UCPL's YouTube channel and Facebook page on the fourth Friday of each month.
