Left Coast Naturals: "Walking the Talk"
BC company making good on its commitment to manufacture and distribute organic, non-GMO and sustainable products.

Burnaby, British Columbia (September 8, 2015): Left Coast Naturals, a BC-based organic and natural food manufacturer and distributor, is proud to demonstrate its devotion to “walking the talk” when it comes to ensuring that its products – including the popular Hippie Foods line – are organic, non-GMO and sustainable. The company adheres to a strict non-GMO policy and is one of the founding members for B Corp certification in Canada -- having met rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
Left Coast Naturals’ dedication to these ideals is evident in a variety of ways, including in the new Hippie Foods Tamari & Cracked Pepper Coconut Chips, recently released alongside a vegan Coconut Bacon version. Prior to launching the Tamari & Cracked Pepper Coconut Chips, Left Coast Naturals discovered there was a very slight chance that the supply chain behind one of the ingredients – nutritional yeast – could have involved a genetically modified ingredient. Nutritional yeast is a crucial ingredient in the Tamari & Cracked Pepper Coconut Chips, used to achieve an umami, savoury flavour. In order to fulfill its promise of “walking the talk,” the company made a strategic decision to mount the search for a nutritional yeast that could pass Non-GMO Project Verification, delaying the launch of the new product by six months, resulting in substantial revenue loss. Happily, in June, the company was able to release the delectable snack – the first food product ever to include nutritional yeast that is Non-GMO Project Verified.
Left Coast Naturals CEO Ian Walker couldn’t be more proud.

“In January of 2014, we decided to implement a non-GMO policy – the first North American grocery distributor to do so,” he says. “We then worked with the Vancouver Food Policy Council to have Non-GMO Awareness Week proclaimed in Vancouver. So, when we came up against an obstacle in developing our Tamari and Cracked Pepper Coconut Chips, we delayed the launch and sacrificed sales dollars to do the right thing.”
In addition to ensuring Left Coast Naturals’ products “walk the talk,” Walker is also committed to demonstrating B Corp values. For example, Walker recently pledged that his salary would never be more than five times that of the lowest paid Left Coast Naturals employee. He took a pay cut to make good on his pledge.
The company is so determined to put its values on the line that it’s pledged to be accountable to its customers through its “Hold Me To It” initiative. Inviting customers to share their #HOLDMETOIT commitment – to make the world a better place – with their social networks.
“We want you to hold us to what we say we’re going to do, making sure that we’re accountable and transparent,” says Walker, fully satisfied that Hippie Foods’ two delicious new products are towing the line.

Left Coast Naturals is not alone in its commitment to "walking the talk." B Corp-certified Nature’s Fare Markets, a family owned and operated business, with six locations across the province, is also on board in its commitment to offering only non-GMO products.

“Our goal as a company is to eliminate the GMOs from all our grocery shelves by 2016. We have discontinued support to companies that have chosen not to certify their products non-GMO or have not removed GMOs from their product ingredients. It is important for Nature’s Fare to support our customers’ right to food free from genetic engineering,” said Roland Siegmund, Director of Purchasing and Vendor Relations for Nature’s Fare Markets.
