Awake Recognized by the Vatican!

When a circle of Catholics started dreaming about Awake in my living room two years ago, I never imagined I would be getting a phone call from a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. When that call came last month, I couldn't believe my ears.

For those who don't know, the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors is the body appointed by Pope Francis to advise him on effective policies for the protection of minors and vulnerable adults throughout the global Church. (Kind-of a big deal in the Catholic world.) One of the members of this commission heard about Awake, attended a recent Courageous Conversation, and then reached out to learn more about our work. After a bit of discussion, this led to Awake being named a "Safeguarding Partner" of the Pontifical Commission, one of only six such partners in the United States at this time.

You can now find Awake's information linked on the home page of the Pontifical Commission's website, www.tutelaminorum.org. We are honored to have our work recognized in this way, and we hope we can be part of a global movement to build a safer Church.

As a side note: Our website analytics showed a number of readers from Vatican City checking out our blog in the past month. We like to joke that maybe Pope Francis is now following our work! :)

We are grateful for this recognition, but we also believe that the affirmation that matters most is what comes from all of you - survivors, fellow advocates, clergy and lay ministers, people in the pews, anyone who cares about transformation and healing in our Church. Ultimately, YOU are the reason Awake exists and YOU are the ones who make our ministry possible.

Let's keep this momentum going, together,

Sara Larson
Executive Director, Awake Milwaukee

Blog Post: The Anniversary of Nate Lindstrom’s Suicide Strengthened My Resolve to Aid Survivors

"Standing in front of Notre Dame High School in Green Bay nine days ago brought up many memories and feelings for me. As an educator who spent more than 15 years teaching high schoolers, I watched hundreds of freshmen make their way from their buses, or parents’ cars, up walkways to enter similar buildings on their first day of high school. Some would be eager and excited, while others were worried and shy. For most of them, it was a mix of emotions as they began this new chapter of their lives. As a mother of three young men who were, not long ago, freshmen boys, I recalled the combination of love and worry and excitement that I felt on their first days, wondering how it would go for each of them. Nine days ago I wondered about Nate Lindstrom’s own first-day journey up the very walkway on which we were gathered..."

Please Join Us In Prayer

Today, could you please pray for our speakers for this Thursday's Courageous Conversation, particularly Esther and Paula who will be sharing their own experiences of abuse as adults?

Lord, please give them your strength and peace to share their stories and speak your truth, and give all of those listening open minds and open hearts.
