WEST PALM BEACH - Like the pink elephant in a room, colon hydrotherapy is one subject most people feel uncomfortable discussing - however for those brave guests like, Hippocrates Health Institute Alumni, they personally reap the benefits of a cleaner, healthier colon.
There is much debate in the medical field as to whether or not cleaning your colon is beneficial or detrimental to your health. Some doctors state that it is best to let your body do its own work. However, how many of the" naysayers" have actually had a colonic and witnessed for themselves the benefits? But for those like American Dr. J.H. Kellogg, who administered colonics to his patients in the 1900s, he touted the benefits of colon hydrotherapy as a means to clean the internal body naturally, while eating a high fiber diet and many fresh vegetables.
Kellogg reported in the 1917 Journal of the American Medical Association that he used colon hydrotherapy on about 40,000 of his patients and that in all but 20 cases he used no surgery for the treatment of gastrointestinal disease.
"We are literally poisoning ourselves into illness when the bowel evacuation is deficient," said Kellogg in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1917.
The colon may be the most overlooked function of the body because it naturally eliminates on its own. However, after years of building up impacted waste along the colon's wall, the toxins may get reabsorbed. If this happens, like Kellogg believed, it effects the body's tissues and the cells become capable of triggering a variety of illnesses.
In 1908 Russian Scientist, Elie Metchnikoff received a Nobel Prize for his research on immunity. He studied how diseases occur due to the build-up of toxins in the body, finding that intestinal toxins actually shorten a person's life. Mechnikov also developed a theory that aging is caused by toxic bacteria in the gut and that lactic acid (like probiotics) could prolong life.
Most people have one bowel movement a day and think they are regular, said Lynn Konicki, a colonic therapist at Hippocrates Health Institute for 10 years.
"People are supposed to have a bowel movement after every meal, and it’s supposed to come out easily all in one piece," said Konicki. “The poor quality of food, dependency on medications and our toxic environment take a toll on our system. Most people have a build-up of impacted waste in their colon. Their digestive system is sluggish and they experience regular constipation.”
At Hippocrates Health Institute, the Life Transformation Program includes one complimentary colonic with a wheatgrass implant. Each guest is seen by a doctor who determines whether or not they can have a colonic. Guests receive colonics and perform their own daily enemas to help flush out the toxins in their bodies. As guests detox on the program, it is important to flush out the toxins on a daily basis, otherwise they reabsorb the toxins back into their system and can become sick, Konicki said.
During decades of research at Hippocrates, Director Dr. Brian Clement has found that colon hydrotherapy helps to restore the electrolyte and mineral balance in the colon while cleansing the system of toxins.
Incorporating colonics into their health regiment, has been a regular practice for Trey and Kristine Tracy, who have been receiving colonics at Hippocrates for the past three years.
"Elimination is a key part to health," said Trey Tracy, a Delray Beach resident. "Getting rid of the bad bacteria in your gut is the first step. You can add all the probiotics you want, but if you still have bad bacteria it just eats up the good bacteria."
Trey Tracy and his wife Kristine embarked on the health path 13 years ago, when his wife was misdiagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. She has Lyme disease. For six years, Tracy said, the misdiagnosis created tremendous damage to her muscular skeletal system, joint ligaments and nerve damage.
But eventually she got on the road to recovery and discovered colonics three years ago at Hippocrates. Trey Tracy said she immediately noticed a positive impact on her health as it helped reduced the inflammation in her body and the level of pain.
Other benefits include, less constipation, clear thinking, increased energy, better absorption of nutrients, clearer skin and a clean colon. For Konicki, she recalled the health benefit that happened to her when she became a colonic specialist.
"I had no short term memory and was having one bowel movement per week," she said. "When I went to school to become a colonic hydrotherapist, I had 10 colonics within two weeks, and my memory came back, that's because I got all the candida out of my gut."
Konicki also recalls the first week she worked at Hippocrates. She worked with a 90 year old man, who was incoherent, couldn't speak nor hear. His wife brought him for colonic and he released five pounds of impacted black waste and started talking and could hear again and came out of his unresponsive state. Another 56-year-old man released an inch long blue crayon that he had swallowed as a kid.
"Imagine, that had been sitting in his colon since he was a child," she said.

From the Organic Garden:
Grow Your Own Wheatgrass!
Wheatgrass juice is nature’s finest medicine. It is our signature elixir here at Hippocrates Health Institute. It is the icon in our logo. It is a powerful concentrated liquid nutrient. Two ounces of wheatgrass juice has the nutritional equivalent of five pounds of the best raw organic vegetables! It is also a powerful detoxifier pulling poisons, stored toxins, and heavy metals out of the body.
It is best to grow wheatgrass indoors. The ideal temperature range is between 65-75 degrees F and humidity less than 50%. You want plenty of indirect sunlight and plenty of artificial light (full-spectrum is best) but, no direct sunlight. Keep the lights on for about twelve hours a day and turn them off at night.

Organic Cotton Bra’s
The most obvious reasons for choosing organic clothing are the environmental and sustainability factors. Did you know that the cotton industry uses over 25% of our industry’s pesticides to produce the crop? Or, for every pair of jeans or t-shirt that is made with cotton that approximately 1 pound of pesticides and chemical fertilizers are used? In addition, most undergarments worn today are made from polyester and nylon fabrics derived from petrochemicals. Like most petroleum products, these fabrics have a very slow decay rate; thus, accumulating in landfills around the world. Furthermore, clothing made with synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon do not allow our skin to breathe properly; therefore suffocating whatever waste our body is trying to remove.
Organic Cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. In addition, federal regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered seed for organic farming. All cotton sold as organic in the United States must meet strict federal regulations covering how the cotton is grown.
In addition to nurturing your skin, we make sure that we are protecting the environment and have as minimal carbon footprint as possible. Our organic intimates are made using the finest sustainably sourced organic and natural fibers to construct our fabrics which are manufactured domestically in California, U.S.A. along with the production of our garments. All of our fabric and trims are sourced within a 60 mile radius leaving us with a very small eco footprint, while supporting local businesses. Sizes for HHI's new Bra line come in Small, Medium, Large, and XL.
