Advancing Equity for Muslim Physicians in the Healthcare Workforce

Advancing Equity for Muslim Physicians in the Healthcare Workforce

Muslim physicians in the US suffer from workplace discrimination directed at their religious identity, and these negative experiences may be increasing.

Comparisons between our two national surveys of Muslim doctors in the US reveal statistically significant changes in that a higher proportion of physicians in 2021 than in 2013 report experiencing religious discrimination over their career course (24% to 53%).
Some other finding of the studies are as follows:-
  • Muslim physicians are increasingly leaving their jobs due to workplace discrimination.
  • Muslim physicians increasingly perceive that they have been passed over for professional advancement because of their religious identity.
  • Participants felt ‘accommodated’ through their own efforts at managing prayer or getting holidays covered by colleagues.
  • Nearly half of respondents struggled to find time for prayer at work.
  • In the 2021 study, participants reported symptoms of depression and burnout.

On October 8th, 2022 at 11am CST, the Initiative on Islam and Medicine (II&M) in concert with the Tanenbaum Center for Inter religious Understanding and American Muslim Health Professionals co-hosted a webinar titled “Advancing Equity for Muslim Physicians in the Healthcare Workforce”. The webinar was built upon a decade of II&M’s research.
