Freemuse’s latest report 'Privatising Censorship, Digitising Violence: Shrinking Space of Women’s Rights to Create in the Digital Age' outlines how women artists interact with the online space and draws attention to the worrying nature and frequency of threats they are directed.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression welcomed the Freemuse report and pointed to the importance of working together to remove barriers to free expression on social media. This includes challenging the mainstream interpretation of public morals and calling on companies responsibilities for human rights.

Iranian female musicians targeted for their artistic expression
Targeting and persecuting female artist has become a trend observed in Iran. According to religious regulations declared by Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi on his website, “All types of music and vocalizations performed for the purposes of pleasure and corruption are haram, whether performed by men or women.”

Musicians Syndicate cancelled Sherine’s singing ban in Egypt
 
The Musicians Syndicate cancelled its decision to ban Egyptian artist Sherine (real name Sherine Abdel-Wahab) from singing on 4 June 2019. The head of the Egyptian Musicians Syndicate, Hany Shaker, stated that the decision has been made after the artist wrote an apology to the Egyptian people and the syndicate.
