Summary of the Branch Meeting Held on 26th February 2014
The steward who was seriously ill has passed away. His family wished to express their appreciation of the donation from the branch. Unfortunately they were unable to use the facilities of the GMB convalescent home. The homes should be better publicised by the branch so members can make better use of them.
It was agreed to invite a representative of the Thorne credit union to a future meeting. Although another credit union has now got facilities in the county it was felt we ought to listen to Thorne, which is exclusive to GMB members and their families, first.
It was agreed to make a donation to the Orgreave Mass Picnic and Festival to be held on June 14th to commemorate those miners victimised during the strike of 1984/5. Anyone wishing for more details should let the secretary know.
It was agreed to make a donation to the Kettering Centre for the Unemployed.
The organisation for Workers Memorial Day is progressing. Bert Schouwenburg, GMB International Officer and Andy Sawford MP will be speaking. We will also have a speaker from Labour Behind the Label. The secretary is hoping to have an exhibition about Labour Behind the Labels work but has hit a few snags. It was agreed that we should use Bradburys for the buffet as we used them before and had no problems. It was agreed that we will make a donation to the June Hancock Mesothelioma Research fund as usual. The secretary has sent out appeals to other GMB branches in the region as well as the regional committee and other unions in the area.
Jackie said how well the branch website is developing and should continue to improve. We are always looking for input from members.
Maggie Don is attending a full meeting of Kettering Borough Council where she will be proposing a motion the all council employees should receive at least the Living Wage of £7.65 similar to that which was recently agreed by Corby Borough council. The minimum wage is currently £6.31. As Kettering is a Tory council it would be surprising if it passed but we must take into account Maggies powers of persuasion.
