April 2015
Dear Buxton Civic Association Member,

Its been a busy month especially in the woods. As well as all the nesting activity that has been going on, we have made a start on our longer term project for Grin Low to increase the biodiversity, by increasing and improving the range of habitats. We are being supported by RSPB and Natural England, whilst the Forestry Commission have been involved both in an advisory capacity and by providing a grant to fund some of the works. Changes were made to the way the grant was administered which necessitated us having to carry out more of the work in one go that we had initially anticipated. Now that the nesting season has started all further works are on hold. We are putting together a small exhibition that explains what we are doing and why and this will be part of our stand at the Spring Fair on 4th May 2015. There is also some information on the website at

Buxton Civic Association are pleased to announce that Nigel Manning has agreed to join the board of directors. Nigel and his family have lived in Buxton for nine years and he takes a keen interest in Buxton and believes that BCA play a vital role in the community.

“I’m a great fan of Buxton Civic Association, and at a time when Buxton needs leadership I believe BCA are one of the organisations well placed to provide it.” Nigel added “I am looking forward to being able to make a contribution to support the Associations work”.

Mike Monaghan, BCA chair said “Nigel’s enthusiasm for the town and for the work we do is apparent, he will be an excellent addition to an already very strong board.”

At the same time BCA bid farewell to Tim Middleton, and Owen Longden both of whom have resigned from the board due to work commitments. Though they will no longer be directors, they have both agreed to provide support and advice and Tim will continue to chair the planning committee until a replacement chair is appointed.

Mike Monaghan explained “All the directors are volunteers and busy people, many with full time jobs. Tim and Owen both made excellent contributions during their time on the board and we are delighted that they will both be available in future to support BCA in a consultative capacity.”

Rotary Clubs of Bakewell and Buxton are running the annual Tunnel Tramp sponsored round walk (no bikes) of 5, 12 or 16 miles in glorious Derbyshire starting at Hassop Station and taking in the tunnels of the Monsal Trail. You can do the walk for any cause close to your heart – whatever inspires you. The walk is open to everyone; it is not restricted to Rotarians. Good route directions will be provided and marshals will be on hand at strategic points to assist.
It is a great way to raise money without having to do any of the organisation!
Further information and entry forms are available on the Rotary Club of Buxton’s website at
We look forward to you joining us on this fun day!
