Hi <<First Name>>,

Happy new year! Whether you've been reading these missives since last decade or just signed up, I'm so glad you're here.

2020 is an Emperor year (we calculate this by adding up the numbers of the year, until we get a number between 1 and 22. 2+0+2+0 = 4, and The Emperor is the fourth card of the Major Arcana).

The Emperor is associated with public life, structure, rules and regulations, rationality, routines, boundaries, strategy, mastery, patriarchs, dads, generals, managers, leaders of all kinds. Traditionally, The Emperor is a king and a military leader, one who makes strategic choices for the good of the group.
The Emperor from the Melanated Classic Tarot

Probably because of its patriarchal and militaristic associations, The Emperor isn't often seen as one of the cool cards in the deck. Most of us would prefer to spend time with the mysterious, ethereal High Priestess, or the flexible and creative Empress.

If the tarot teaches us anything, though, it's that there's a time and place for all approaches, and while some experiences are served by an intuitive, Priestess approach, others demand solidity, stability, strategy.

That's the energy we're working to integrate this year. Collectively, it's a chance for us to identify power structures and frameworks that no longer work for us. We can break old ways down, if we're willing to propose new structures to put in their place.

In our individual lives, we might like to work with this Emperor energy by creating more strict and supportive routines, setting boundaries, by paring things down to the essentials, by advancing our careers, or our public lives. We can think about how we use and abuse power, and how we might cultivate a sense of good stewardship and ethical leadership in our work, relationships, and community.

Indeed, when I think about how The Emperor's lessons might play out across our world stage, where we already see the dark side of so many of The Emperor's attributes, I have to believe that the best thing we can do in an Emperor year is to learn how to wield power in an ethical, humane way in our own lives.

In our own small corners of the world - our relationships, our neighbourhoods - we can try to become models of positive stewardship, and the kind of leaders that make choices for the empowerment of all of us, not just the few. Let's try to be good Emperors this year!

If you feel called to, take out The Emperor card from your deck and ponder it. Read about it, reflect on it, journal on it. Think about how it might come out to play over the course of your year, and how you might work with its energies.

And, if you feel like it, have a go at this spread I created for exploring Emperor energy in your life -

CARD ONE: What is the state of my personal power and sovereignty as I step into this new year?

CARD TWO: What approaches or areas of my life, personal or collective, am I being called to challenge or restructure?

CARD THREE: In what way, or which area of my life, am I currently called to take on a greater sense of ethical leadership and mastery in 2020?

CARD FOUR: How might I put my skills and abilities to strategic use for my community and the collective this year?

CARD FIVE: How might I support myself in creating solid and supportive routines and boundaries throughout 2020?

As ever, if you give this spread a try, feel free to hit reply and let me know how it went for you. Also, if you have any Emperor insights you'd like to share, send them my way!

All Profits This Weekend to Bushfire Relief

You've probably heard that Australia is experiencing a bushfire season of unprecedented severity in our changing climate. Certainly, my Australian customers will need no explanation! These fires have gutted many communities, taken lives, destroyed infrastructure and livelihoods, killed, by some estimates, a billion animals, and threatened our ecosystems, water supply, and biodiversity in ways we can't yet measure. It's a bad scene down here right now, to say the least, and a lot of people and creatures need help.

To that end, I'll be donating all of my profits from Two Sides Tarot (that is, what I make on a sale after paying for the product, and shipping and handling) from today until midnight AEST on Monday 13th January to the Fire Relief Fund for First Nations Communities and the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park’s rescue efforts (the above photo is from their Instagram).

If you'd like to make a direct donation to support organisations helping affected people and animals, and our essential and selfless volunteer firefighters, I shared a list of organisations over on Instagram. You can find that here. Please donate directly if you are able.

Pre-Orders Now Open!

Cult favourite deck, the She Wolfe Tarot, is finally on its way back - can I get an AMEN?! Decks are due back in stock in mid-February, and I've just opened up pre-orders.

Also coming back is She Wolfe's little sister, the Serpentfire Tarot, and for the first time ever, Devany's new oracle deck, the Serpentfire Sigil Oracle. Exciting times!

The Spacious Tarot is very nearly here!

In case you missed it, I'm so happy to say that I will be stocking the forthcoming Spacious Tarot, by Annie Ruygt and Carrie Mallon. A deck that features images and symbols from our natural world, and has an ethos of spaciousness and quiet, seems like just the kind of medicine we need right now.

I hope to be able to ship decks out at the end of this month. Pre-orders are now open here

There's also a whole lot of good stuff in the shop, like zines for your inner Empress, and old faves like the Melanated Classic Tarot back in stock.

Ok, that's all from me. Until next time, pray for clean, running water, and for our afflicted earth, and to appease the fire goddess, and for fresh air that brings a sigh of relief. Pray our leaders see sense, pray that we can get the money out of politics, pray that we can take care of each other through all of this.

Be well,
Marianne
