Boarding House Residents Have Rights!

New poster & brochure – perfect for your reception area
We have developed two new resources for the boarding houses project – a poster and brochure. Both include information on some of the more common issues residents have regarding their rights, e.g. eviction, refunds and rent increases.

We hope you can help distribute the posters and brochures as widely as possible. We also hope the resources will help inform residents and workers of their rights. That knowledge can give residents the self assurance to challenge any demands that are wrong at the time they occur. Please email me to let me know how many posters and brochures you would like. They are free of charge.

Other boarding houses resources

Residents are still able to contact the boarding houses hotline for assistance should they need to do that: Phone 1800 767 126.

And remember that factsheets on boarding houses can be found at tenants.org.au.

We are also in the process of updating the boarding house chapter in the Tenants Rights Manual.

Two dates for your diary

Your Response to Onboard

This will be the last Onboard e-bulletin you receive from me as the boarding houses education co-ordinator, as the funding for the project is coming to an end. This is the sixth Onboard since August 2014. Articles have ranged from announcements on resources for residents, examining case studies and answering commonly asked questions, to highlighting research being done on living in boarding houses.

Please could you let me know:

  • Were you able to make use of the information in Onboard?
  • What information did you find most useful?
  • How did you use that information?
  • What more would you like to see happen for residents of boarding houses?
  • What emphasis would you like to see in any future legislation?
I would appreciate hearing from you. Please email me any comments you have regarding your experience with boarding house residents and the impact the Boarding Houses Act, 2012 has had.

Please note: you'll continue to receive our other Tenants' Union e-bulletins. You can always update your subscription preferences here. Simply tick the boxes for the e-bulletins you'd like to receive. Alternatively, email contact@tenantsunion.org.au and let us know how you'd like to stay in touch.
