Together, we put tenants' rights on the agenda

Last year, with your support, the More Bang For Your Bond campaign demanded a better deal for tenants when we presented your petition to NSW Parliament. Across the political spectrum, MPs have committed to supporting the campaign.

Now's the time to demand a better deal for tenants

For the first time in 5 years, NSW renting laws are under review. NSW Fair Trading is currently looking at the Residential Tenancies Act 2010, to see if it is meeting its objectives. Tenants and renters are saying that this law should deliver greater stability, liveability and affordability.

This is a unique opportunity for you to have a say, by making a 'submission'. Many people assume that only an organisation with formal policy staff can write a submission, but anyone can make one. It is a little known fact that a personal story or a few sentences about your experience as a renter can be a submission, and will often have a big impact!

Have your say now via the Fair Trading online submission form or by sending an email to policy@finance.nsw.gov.au.

Please hurry – submissions close on Friday 29 January 2016.

If you're pressed for time, your submission could be just a few sentences. You don't have to answer every question or write in any particular style. If you have a bit more time, check out our 4 page quick guide to the Review, which covers key points for reform.

As part of the Review, Fair Trading is considering the role of Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Services. These services are funded with the interest earned on tenants’ bonds. They provide invaluable, independent advice to tenants, but are struggling to meet demand. Their funding has not increased in real terms since 2002, while the number of tenants in NSW has grown by at least 25%. Tell NSW Fair Trading that tenants deserve well-funded, independent services!
