A note from James Willcox, Founder

Untamed Borders started the year with a truly ground breaking trip to Puntland - a semi-autonomous region of Somalia. I was fortunate to be able to lead a small group in search of a lighthouse at the very tip of the Horn of Africa and we successfully completed the first commercial tourist trip to the region for 25 years.

It was a real privilege to have been able to spend time in the tiny fishing communities in the remote far north-east of the country and learn that there is much more to Somalia than pirates and camels. Photos from the trip can be found here.

If you are keen to learn more about the region then do check out the talk that I gave at the Royal Geographical Society in London last month (see link).

Happy travels for 2016

Recent trips with Untamed Borders

So far in 2016 we have guided trips to numerous countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Arctic Russia, Sudan and Iran. Some of the highlights are below:
  • Ski Afghanistan. 2016 saw us run our 6th successful ski season in Afghanistan. We ran two trips (photos can be found here) as well as providing guiding for journalists from ABC Australia who filmed  this documentary. Dates for our 2017 trips will be released later this month.
  • Our Horn of Africa trip to Ethiopia and Somaliland was a big success. Our guests visited the inhospitable Danakil Depression - home to the hottest inhabited place on the planet and spent a night on the edge of one of the few permanently active lava lakes in the world at Erta Ale (see photos). We will be returning with a group on our Horn of Africa trip in March 2017 so do contact us for more information about this trip.
  • We arranged a private trip to Sudan which included a night at the fabulous pyramids at Meroe (see photos).

Upcoming trips with Untamed Borders team

Many of our fixed date trips for 2016 are now full. Sadly there are no places available on our Melons and Grapes – Grand Afghan Tour, Trek the Wakhan trip, Chechnya Dagestan and Russia's deep south or the Marathon of Afghanistan trips. However we do have some space on a few of our trekking expeditions. And we can always create a private trip for you or perhaps one of our fixed date trips in 2017 may be of interest.
  • K2 Concordia Trek – Fancy trekking in the shadow of four 8000 metre peaks and walking the length of one of the biggest glaciers on the planet? We still have spaces on our trekking expedition to K2 Base Camp including the crossing of the epic Gondogoro La. See here for trip details.
  • Looking for inspiration for next year? We are planning our first ever commercial ski trip to Iraq. Contact us for details.
  • Get in touch for a tailored trip. Last month we brought a couple to live with Nenets reindeer herders in the brutal conditions of Russia's far north on the Yamal Peninsula, (see photos).
If any of the above sounds tempting or you want to meet one of the Untamed Borders team for a chat then please get in touch.
