A Note from James Willcox, Founder

2016 seems to have got a bad press, but for Untamed Borders it was a fabulous year. We ran a record number of trips to 14 countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. Some of my favourites include our groundbreaking trip to Puntland in January. March saw us arrange our 6th ski season in Afghanistan and arrange logistics in Iran for this ski film. Also in Afghanistan we were proud to be one of the organisers of the Marathon of Afghanistan in the Autumn, as well as arranging the first ever commercial kayaking trip to the country.
Being able to assist in the development of small projects such as this one, which is supporting and training female mountain guides in Tajikistan, as well as helping Farishta who is an 18 year old Internally Displaced Person (IDP) from another province in Afghanistan has also been a meaningful highlight. Farishta lives in a cave built 1500 years ago by the Buddhist kingdom that ruled Central Afghanistan and uses another cave to teach other children from other IDP families. As she says, “I have the gift of education so I want others to have this too.”
Wishing you good luck on your travels for 2017

Upcoming Trips

Our full list of fixed date trips for 2017 can be found here. Some like our Afghan Spring trip and the Chechnya, Dagestan and Russia's Deep South trip are fully booked. There are still a few places on others like our upcoming Horn of Africa trip to Ethiopia and Somaliland and our brand new fixed itinerary Afghan Kayaking trip this summer. In addition we run a large number of private trips each year. Sometimes guests are keen to find others to join them for their escapades:
  • We offer both 5-7 day private trips to Puntland where you can explore the remote communities and villages existing along Somalia’s coastline, as well as the Italian lighthouse on Cape Guardafui which is Africa’s most easterly point. We have groups currently looking for others to share the cost of these trips.
  • We have one space available on a trek to the Chinese side of K2 with a group of 3 others between 20th September and 9th October 2017.
  • You may be familiar with our trips to Mogadishu. Although we have our ‘Add-On’ fixed itinerary once a year, we run over a dozen more private trips annually. So if you’re interested to find out more please get in touch, it’s also possible for us to try and link up individual guests with one another to share a trip.

Expeditions in 2017

With Matt Traver joining the team last summer as our Trekking and Expeditions Manager, we’ve been preparing a variety of fixed itinerary and private trips for this year.

Our brand new Journey Across Tuva is a fixed itinerary program running for 14 days in Siberia’s southern Republic of Tuva. The highlight of the trip will involve 10 days of rafting for 400km through the taiga covered Sayan Mountains on the Yenisei – the world’s largest river flowing in to the Arctic Ocean.

K2 Concordia

We’re running a 21 day trip to Pakistan’s K2 Concordia with Gondogoro La. Whilst a crossing of the GGL has been a game of luck in recent years, we remain hopeful that it will be possible to do this year due to recent political easing and also because the trip will be accompanied by a Liaison Officer.

Central Asia

The high mountains of Central Asia remain as popular as ever and so far this year we have multiple private groups heading to Tajikistan's Pamir and Fann Mountain region, as well as the Wakhan and we are continuing to scope out new destinations in Siberia and the Russian Arctic.
If any of the above trips sound tempting or you'd like to have a chat with one of the Untamed Borders team please get in touch.
