Croydon Projects for over 50


You can find a range of activities for 50+ across the borough on our Simply Connect Croydon database. From Fitness and exercise classes to Care dogs befriending services, from community hubs to reading clubs, there is something for everyone!

Croydon has a long tradition of Day care centres, including UNACC in South Norwood, the Selsdon Centre for the retired or the Purley and Coulsdon Club for the elderly. CNCA (Croydon Neighbourhood Care Association) brings them all together and you can find their membership list at https://www.cnca.org.uk/members-2/

Croydon also offers a range of social groups and meet ups like the coffee morning at St Francis in Monks Hill or the Stroke Action Croydon meet up in West Croydon!

Below is a sample of activities across the borough:

Community Hubs in Selsdon and New Addington
Are you caring for someone in your family? Want to know where you can get information and support to help you stay well and independent in your local community? No need to make an appointment - just come along for a chat and a cuppa and find out how we can help. Friendly local staff will help you find information and support related to stay healthy and active, organisations and things to do in your local community and support for carers. 
  • Selsdon Community Hub is held on every first Tuesday of the month, from 1-4pm, at Selsdon Baptist Church, 153 Addington Road, CR2 8LL. 
  • New Addington Community Hub is held every Wednesday (please note it is not open next week) from 10.30am-1.30pm, at 120 Central Parade, New Addington, CR0 0JW.

Selsdon Centre for the Retired 
The Selsdon Centre holds a monthly bingo event with fish and chips. The next one will be held on Friday 2 September. Other upcoming activities include a live music Cockney sing-a-long on Friday 30 September. Further details and prices on their website.

Health & Well being activities for carers
The Carers Information Services offers free health and wellbeing activities for carers in Croydon each month. Sessions include writing for wellbeing, chair-based exercise class, carers cafe and a Carers Support Centre choir.

Well being activities for older people
MHA Communities South London holds a number of sessions for older people, including a walking group, gardening, coffee mornings and dementia cafe. For details,

Yoga and the Mind – Tuesdays at the Active Communities Hub
Yoga and mindfulness allows us to become more aware to improve our physical and mental well being. Gayetri invites you to yoga at the Active Communities Hub, Upper Mall, Centrale shopping centre, 21 North End, CR0 1TY. Every Tuesday, from 2-4pm. Registration required on arrival. Free.

Dog befriending service
The charity Care Dogs offers a dog befriending service within South London, pairing older people with local volunteers and their dogs, so everyone can experience the benefit of canine companionship https://www.caredogs.org.uk/

Spotlight on: Age UK Croydon


Age UK Croydon is a vibrant local charity whose aim is to promote the health, wellbeing and independence of older people who live in Croydon. They have a team of around 50 staff and over 100 volunteers who work together to deliver an extensive range of services across Croydon. Age UK Croydon’s services include:

Events and training


Help make Croydon a more dementia-friendly borough
A new Spotlight on Dementia group has been organised by Age UK Croydon and Alzheimer’s Society, who want to hear peoples’ thoughts on a range of different topics, to help make Croydon a more dementia-friendly borough. The group is for people with dementia and their carers. Join them at Scratchley Hall, Thornton Heath, on 31 August, from 2-3pm. Download flyer

SWLLC Managing Your Money webinar
This South West London Law Centres’ (SWLLC) webinar is aimed at individuals who want to get the best deals and make the most of their money. This includes looking at best deal websites and deal checkers, discounts, voucher codes, signing up for deals, cashback sites, APR, overdrafts and savings.

Training and networking opportunity for volunteers - Mental Health
Do you volunteer for a local charity or community group, and want to develop your skills and network to support the wellbeing of service users? If so, you’re warmly invited to Croydon Citizens’ information evening on Be Well hubs, hosted by Bishop Rosemarie Mallett. The event will take place 6-7.30pm at LSBU Croydon Campus, 3 Wellesley Road, CR0 2NW, on Wednesday 21 September. Read more

Sustainable Thornton Heath's Pop-up Sustainable Living Hubs 
The Sustainable Thornton Heath community group has been running monthly ‘Pop-up Sustainable Living Hubs’ since March 2022, after securing some funding. These hubs are free community events lasting a few hours that are open to all, which allow people to learn, receive information and advice, and get inspired about a whole range of sustainable living themes from a range of local people, groups and organisations. Spotlight on: ClearCommunityWeb


Community Tech Support
ClearCommunityWeb's Community Tech Support Drop-ins are informal spaces where you can get support with your mobile phone, laptop or tablet. You can find out about other courses available, get friendly advice or just come along and quietly practice. Get help with setting up accounts, installing apps, resetting passwords, being safer online and more!
  • Tuesdays from 1.30-3.30pm, at Age UK Croydon, Brigstock Road.
  • Fridays from 10.00am-12.00pm, at Upper Norwood Library Hub, Westow Street, SE19. Download flyer

Opportunities for residents over 50


Flu jabs and Covid-19 booster to be offered to the over 50s 
Everyone aged 50 and over will be among those offered a Covid-19 booster and a flu jab this autumn under plans to increase protection against respiratory viruses ahead of winter. Read more

The Mayor of London’s Warmer Homes programme provides free heating, insulation and ventilation improvements for low-income Londoners who own their own homes or rent privately. Read more

Stronger Voices training programme
Stronger Voices is a free, six-month strategic communications capacity-building programme for London-based equality organisations. The programme supports equality organisations to communicate more effectively with their audiences and raise the profile of their work in the media. Read more

Money Management: How to support people manage their money
Find out what money management support is available within the borough for those you work with. Hear from Citizen's Advice Croydon and other local partners on what support they offer to residents.

Funding


Croydon Relief in Need
The Relief in Need charity gives grants to Croydon residents of all ages who are in need, or facing distress or hardship, and to local and national organisations which help them. There is a focus on older people's projects at present. Organisations can apply for a maximum of £30,000, there is no minimum.

Funding for activities in Croydon Community spaces
Croydon Voluntary Action is inviting funding proposals from our Croydon grassroots community partners to provide free support within their local Community Hub (or another community space linked to the Hub) to support people struggling to keep well in coping with the cost-of-living crisis. Up to £5,000 in six Local Partnership Areas across Croydon.

Home Instead funds activities and projects that further the needs of our ageing adult population through wellbeing activities and programmes to prevent social isolation and loneliness.

City Bridge Trust – Positive Transitions 
The priority areas for the funding includes: services for older people; tackling abuse; exploitation and hatred; criminal justice; and more.

Yapp Charitable Trust
Yapp Charitable Trust offer grants only for core funding to registered charities with a total annual expenditure of less than £40,000 who are undertaking work that focuses on one of their priority groups: including older people.

Clarion Digital Grants
Clarion supports projects that help Clarion residents and the wider community to get online, and safely and confidently use the internet as an everyday tool. Projects or activities should enable people to discover how developing digital skills and using online tools and services can enhance their daily lives.
