Dear friends of Omega,

Springtime is (sort of) here and we hope there's a spring in your step!

We have something for everyone this month: a solemn Good Friday service, a jubilant Easter mass, a workshop, a performance at an art show opening, and a Sunday service. And...a party! Happy 40th birthday to us!

So however you're connected to Omega, we hope we'll see or hear from you this springtime. That would surely put a spring in our step!

With blessings,
Becky, Katie, Martha, and Margaret

Omega History 101: "Lifting the Soul" in Dance Magazine
The Feast of St. Francis of Asissi (Earth Mass), Cathedral of St. John the Divine, circa the early 90s.

Omega was one of several liturgical dance companies featured in the "Religion in Motion" issue of Dance Magazine in December 2001. In an article written by Omega West's own Janet Weeks (now of Omega East), Janet and Carla De Sola talk about, among other things, the fact that liturgical dance presents unique challenges for choreographers:

"You have to consider not only the mood of the day but also the part of the service you're creating for," [says Carla De Sola]...And all liturgical works have to be created with particularities of each sanctuary's architecture in mind. Sometimes the dancers must negotiate stairs. Sometimes an immovable altar or ark will sit in the middle of the dancing space and must be worked into the choreography.

From cathedrals to mountaintops to the streets of NY, creating dances for specific occasions and sites comes--to quote Carla--with the territory of "dream(ing) liturgically."
