The Weekly

JANUARY 26, 2021

One of our most robust link-lists in quite some time and a new First Round Case Study feature—all in service of trying to make sense of this wild ride we’re on. We’re still trucking along this week and hope you all are, too. Make sure to view the full version of this mailer if you don’t want to miss out on any of the good news below.

AIGA Chicago’s anew: 2021 Community Survey invites our design community to begin a process of defining wants, needs, representation, accountability, vision, and healing by participating in this survey—insight that will help guide the chapter forward.
Synesthesia is an experiment combining real-time graphics and audio to create visual and musical phrases. Stunning, all-around. The happiest of distractions.
Amanda Mull in The Atlantic’s “Health” section writes, “yes, the pandemic is ruining your body. Quarantine is turning you into a stiff, hunched-over, itchy, sore, headachy husk.” Read if you want something to shake your head to (in disbelief, frustration, and solidarity).
More than the sum of its parts beautifully captures Chicago-based stained-glass artist Ben Houtkamp’s creative process and backstory. As a proud owner of two Houtkamp-originals, I must say—Ben rocks (and so do our friends at Varyer for chatting with him).
Simply put: If you’re a designer and need something to communicate what it is you do...look no further. UserInyerface’s got you covered. Prepare to be wildly frustrated.
Listen to Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman speak about activism and art in times of darkness.

First Round Case Study: Saint Kate

Pre-pandemic, we had the pleasure of participating in First Round: Chicago—a one-day showcase of original presentations made to clients showing initial design explorations for logo, identity, and branding projects—facilitated by the fine folks at UnderConsideration.

While nothing beats the live presentations of their in-person events, Armin Vit and Bryony Gomez-Palacio have created case studies of First Round presentations, bringing you annotations from the designers, pro-tips from Armin and Bryony, and insightful Q&As that set up the context, goals, and approach for each project.

So, without further ado—we’re pleased to share that our First Round presentation featuring our work for Saint Kate is one of four inaugural case studies now online! The price is $12 per case study (or $40 for all inaugural 4). For $2 off any case study, use code FRCS-OneDesignCompany. Enjoy the super-deep dive into our process and the work, friends.
