CREATING OPPORTUNITIES

In July, the WAITRO Office Germany invited the Executive Board and the Regional Focal Points (RFPs) to a three-day workshop on the strategic alignment of WAITRO and the identification of future opportunities.

A highlight on the agenda was the kick-off to build consortia for three upcoming HORIZON 2020 calls. During the sessions, Lola Rodriguez from LEITAT, Kirstie Yvette Wild from DTI, and Jan Philip Kopka and Dr. Katrin Ostertag from Fraunhofer facilitated the discussions on the general direction for first stage proposals. In September, these project ideas will be uploaded on SAIRA. Interested WAITRO members can apply to join the consortia by submitting proposals.

By facilitating an engagement in HORIZON 2020, WAITRO promotes the participation of non-European RTOs in EU funded projects. To increase the involvement of WAITRO members in the future, Dirk Saseta Krieg (Regional Representative for Europe) presented a strategy to establish WAITRO as the major global network for EU funded research collaborations. To execute this strategy, WAITRO has already taken the first steps by providing insights on opportunities under HORIZION EUROPE and enabling workshops for consortia.

Besides focusing on new strategies and opportunities to strengthen the WAITRO membership, the workshop participants also discussed a more integrative approach on capacity development. To further integrate members into the development of activities under the WAITRO Capacity Development Program, a capacity needs assessment was designed that will be send out by each Regional Focal Point within the upcoming weeks.

ESTABLISHING NEW CONNECTIONS WITH THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

To continuously grow and find new ways to enhance WAITRO’s network, Dominik Reinertz (Head of WAITRO Office Germany) and Dirk Saseta Krieg (Regional Representative for Europe) met with Dr. Christina Russo, Director for International Cooperation at the Directorate General for Research and Innovation in the European Commission. Russo, who is responsible for international cooperation in research and innovation, showed a strong interest in WAITRO’s achievements and activities.

ECKART’S CORNER

A WORD FROM THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

Dear ladies and gentlemen,
dear Global Innovation Family,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kirstie Yvette Wild for her dedication and work for the Global Innovation Family. Kirstie served as a Regional Focal Point for WAITRO for four years and has been active within the organization since 2010.

She engaged and attracted WAITRO members to become involved in EU FP7- and later Horizon 2020 projects, to mention just a few of her successful achievements. We congratulate Kirstie to her new position and wish her all the best for her future path.

I am pleased to welcome the University of Huddersfield (United Kingdom) as a new member of the Global Innovation Family! We are looking forward to fruitful collaborations, and will continue to strengthen the network and infrastructure to share innovative ideas and research across borders and boundaries for a sustainable future.

The WAITRO Secretariat welcomes two new colleagues: Mona Kern and Lina Kirschbaum have joined the Secretariat on August 1st 2019.  With Lina’s expertise in international business and former working experience in event management and Mona’s marketing background in internal and external communication, they are a valuable addition to the Secretariat.

Unfortunately, former team member Karina Faßbender has left the Secretariat as her career path took her to work in Kenya. We thank her for her support and wish her all the best!

Sincerely,
Eckart
