Gear up
for Heating Season

With the winter heating months quickly approaching, it's time to inspect and clean your humidifier. A properly maintained humidifier is beneficial to your comfort, your health, and helps achieve full energy-efficiency in your home.

Humidifiers that are not properly cleaned may pump bacteria or mold spores into the air. Here are some easy ways to clean your humidifier:

Change the filter.
Most humidifiers use replaceable filters. Change your filter at the start of the winter heating season, and every two months afterward.

Wash the water tank.  Fill the tank with 3 cups of vinegar and let it sit for an hour. Vinegar is a natural cleaner that loosens buildup. Rinse the tank thoroughly when you are finished.

Wipe down the humidifier frame.
Use a sponge dampened with vinegar to remove dust and other debris, so they do not enter the water tank.

If you don't have a humidifier, consider the Vicks Cool Moisture humidifier, available at Bedard Medical Supplies. This humidifier provides invisible moisture for everyday comfort, helping to return essential moisture to dry air. It provides two output settings and a 1-gallon water tank that runs up to 18 hours per filling.

Breast Cancer Awareness

October is here and with it comes Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, and though rare, men too are being diagnosed. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women, and accounts for nearly 25% of all cancers.

What are the signs and symptoms of breast cancer? The most common symptoms include a change in how the breast or nipple feels (such as lumps, skin thickening, changes in shape or size, or dimpling), a change in the appearance of the breast or nipple, and any nipple discharge. If any of these symptoms arise, make an appointment to see your doctor.

The best defense is early detection. Here are a few suggestions for how to reduce your risk:

  • Conduct monthly breast self-exams
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stay physically active
  • Eat your fruits and vegetables daily
  • Do not smoke
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Have your doctor conduct yearly clinical breast exams
  • Follow your doctor's recommendation for mammograms
  • Have an early detection plan. Visit this website to create yours now!
To kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month, as a part of the Wellness Celebration on October 3rd & 4th, Transitions at Bedard invites you to stop in for a bra fitting. While you're here, pick up American Breast Care's "Faces of Inspirations" book, which shares stories of survival and inspiration from survivors, caregivers and the newly diagnosed. The book is yours for a donation, which will be given to Maine Breast Cancer Coalition's Support Service Fund.

Did you know...

...Bedard Pharmacy provides Pain Management options?

Pain is often cause by inflammation.  Anti-inflammatories such as Advil (Ibuprofen) or Aleve (Naproxen) are great for minor aches and pains.

Are  you Pregnant? It is important to discuss pain management with your doctor if you are pregnant. Certain Over the counter (OTC) products should be avoided during pregnancy, such as Advil (Ibuprofen).

If your pain is not adequately controlled, it is important to talk with your doctor or pharmacist.  Although certain pain medications are over the counter, they can still be dangerous if you take too much.  A prescription strength pain medication may be required to control your pain.

Don't like taking tablets to control your pain?  Pain medications are available in many dosage forms for OTC and prescription strength, including gels, cream, ointments, liquids, and patches.

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medications to control your pain.  Even though certain medications are available without a prescription, they can still interact with other prescription and OTC medications.
