7 Healthy Habits for the New Year

With the new year just beginning, now is a good time to begin new healthy habits. These 7 healthy habits will help you to improve the quality of your life.

  1. Exercise. Every little bit helps. You don't have to join a pricey gym to get good exercise. There are plenty of tools that can help you get great exercise right in your home, or even at the office. Use an exercise ball for stretching and core strengthening. Sit on the exercise ball at home or work to increase core strength. Thera-Bands and exercise tubing can be used in a number of exercises and stretches that benefit many muscle groups throughout your body. Increase your range of motion with exercise pulleys. Park your vehicle in the back of the parking lot - the extra steps to the door will make your heart stronger.
  2. Get enough sleep. Most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep each night. If you can get enough sleep, you'll be less likely to get sick, will have an easier time maintaining a healthy weight, and will see a boost in brain power. If you are having a difficult time sleeping, try making a simple change, such as trying the Contour Cloud Pillow.
  3. Take a daily multivitamin. Most people do not get the nutrients their body needs from food alone. Taking a daily multivitamin helps to fill the gaps in your diet, aiding in increasing your overall health. Try Metagenics supplements, specially formulated to address specific health issues. The complete line of Metagenics products is available at Bedard Pharmacy.
  4.  Wash your hands. Hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent infection and illness. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another, and throughout the community. For many people, hand washing brings on dry skin. Gloves In a Bottle is a shielding lotion that works like an invisible pair of gloves. It lasts for 4 hours or more, even through hand washes. It keeps irritants away from your skin while helping to maintain your skins natural moisture.
  5. Drink water. Water helps keep our bodies hydrated, and our muscles energized. Muscle cells that become dehydrated shrivel, which can result in muscle fatigue. Drinking enough water also helps to aide the kidneys and bowels, keeping your body regular.
  6. Wear sunscreen. Most people will wear sunscreen on a hot summer day, but few realize that it's equally important to wear sunscreen whenever you go outside. Regular sunscreen use significantly decreases the risk of skin cancer, and keeps your skin smoother, healthier, and younger-looking.
  7. Increase anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants help the body attack free radicals that contribute to cancer, vision loss, heart disease, and a host of chronic conditions. Eating whole fruits, vegetables, and whole grains - all rich in anti-oxidants - help provide protection against many free radicals.

It's a New Year - Time to Update Your Bras

Whether or not we're aware of it, our bodies are constantly changing. A woman's bra size changes before, during, and after pregnancy, with weight fluctuations, with age, and with certain health conditions. What's more, a woman's breasts don't just change in size; they also change in shape.

With this in mind, we recommend getting re-fitted for bras every 6 months. Our fitters at Transitions at Bedard are specially certified to find the right fit for you - no matter what your circumstance is.

Your body benefits from a proper-fitting bra. Most importantly, correct support prevents your breasts from sagging in the future. Certain types of back pain can also be alleviated as well with the right bra.

Resistance Training with Thera-Bands

Thera-Bands and exercise tubing are great and inexpensive tools that allow you to gain the benefits of resistance training without the expense of a gym membership. Here are some exercises that you can do at home:

1. Overhead Arm Raises - To keep your shoulders and arms flexible, add overhead arm raises to your workout. This exercise will help you maintain your ability to reach objects in your kitchen cabinets.

2. Knee Extension Raises - As we age, our joint mobility can become compromised, making it difficult to get up from a chair or walk up a flight of stairs. Knee extensions strengthen your hamstrings, the back of your upper legs.

3. Strengthen Weak Neck Muscles - Neck and upper back exercises may relieve neck stiffness and pain, increase your mobility and reduce the symptoms of muscle loss and arthritis.

4. Bicep Curls - Bicep curls won't add bulky muscle to your frame, but you'll notice that carrying your groceries into the house gets a little easier.

5. Seated Hip Flexion - This exercise will help ease lower back pain and increase the flexibility of your hip joints.

Winter is here, and with it comes snow, ice and slippery conditions. Arm yourself against falls with a cane ice grip.

Cane ice grips fit all standard size canes and crutches. They attach easily, flip up when the ice grip is not needed, and can be removed after winter is over. Stainless steel prongs grip the ice to maximize stability and user safety.

Walker Skis

Walker skis allow your walker to comfortably glide over most surfaces, including grass, floors, snow and ice, and cement. They insert into the extension legs on the back of wheeled walkers, and fit most walkers.
