Join Sinister Wisdom for a very special evening with Joan Nestle in conversation with Cheryl Clarke

Tuesday, November 10th at 7 p.m. ET on Zoom!
Tuesday, 3 November 2020

Dear Sinister Wisdom Sisters,

I am writing this email -- and sending it out on election day in the United States during this global COVID-19 pandemic. What is giving me the most comfort and solace on this day is knowing that all of you are out there in the world, alone and together, dreaming, scheming, and working for a better world for lesbians and for everyone. Thank you for that work and that energy.

This note is brief. I want to remind everyone to mark their calendar for what may be the most inspiring and amazing event of our year: a celebration with Joan Nestle in conversation with Cheryl Clarke. This event will be next Tuesday, 10 November 2020 at 7 p.m. ET on Zoom. The full zoom link and other details are below. We have special messages planned for Joan marking how her work has inspired so many of us, and we are all looking forward to hearing from her in conversation with Cheryl at the event. Please join us if you are able--and do feel free to share this information about the event with others who have been inspired by and touched by Joan Nestle and her work.

Fall Fundraising Update

Part of my job as the Editor and Publisher of Sinister Wisdom--in addition to curating four smashing issues of the journal every year--is curating events like the one next Tuesday. Another part of my job is ensuring that we have the money to operate the journal, to deliver the issues to subscribers, and to continue this work. Each fall, we do a fundraising campaign. In early October, I wrote the following message to you and the Sinister Wisdom community:
Long-time readers and supporters of Sinister Wisdom know that with the fall issue comes the fall fundraising campaign. Sinister Wisdom's pitch is simple: Sinister Wisdom publishes four amazing issues of the journal every year featuring the best lesbian writing and art. We mail those issues to subscribers, often with a little bonus tucked inside (a sticker, a badge, a bookmark, a card). There is a standard scale for subscriptions, but no one is turned away; Sinister Wisdom offers a sliding scale for subscriptions and sends copies and subscriptions free to women in prison and mental institutions.

Organizationally, we are lean and effective. Almost all of the labor is volunteer. I volunteer all of my time as editor and publisher for the journal. People show up to support
Sinister Wisdom because they believe in the mission and because they love the work Sinister Wisdom does in the world.

That is where you come in. If you groove to
Sinister Wisdom, the print issues of the journal, this email newsletter, the special Sapphic Classics that we publish, the righteous work we are doing in the world to promote lesbian literary culture, please subscribe and make a gift to Sinister Wisdom.

Our goals this year are pretty basic. To do our publishing in 2021,
Sinister Wisdom needs to raise $15,000 through the fall fundraising campaign. We hope some of that will come with an increase in the number of monthly sustainers. We have a robust monthly giving program that starts at just $3 a month and ensures that you will be a subscriber at that rate (just $36 a year) for life. In August of 2020, Sinister Wisdom had 58 monthly sustainers giving a total of $509/monthly. Our goal for the campaign is to increase that to 75 or add in 17 more monthly sustainers adding a minimum of $51/monthly for the sustainer program. Monthly sustainers receive an uninterrupted subscription to Sinister Wisdom and a monthly email from me with behind the scenes updates about our work. You can see a sample of these emails here. If you are able, I'd love to welcome you as a monthly sustainer. You can do so here. Click on the link below Monthly Payment Options.

Sinister Wisdom relies on donations to keep operating and sending out copies of the journal to subscribers and for free to women in prison and mental institutions. This year, I published an annual report of our activities. You can see it here. Think about what you can do to support Sinister Wisdom and our work in the world. If you can, please subscribe, give a gift subscription, and/or make a donationYour support is crucial.
As always, Sinister Wisdom supporters have jumped in to support the journal. During the month of October, Sinister Wisdom received $7,176 in donations and I processed 123 new and renewed subscriptions. In addition, Sinister Wisdom now has 67 monthly sustainers, an increase of 15% since August. We still have more to go though. We need to raise $15,000 in donations through our fall fundraising campaign and add eight more monthly sustainers. Can you help?

I am looking forward to seeing you all next Tuesday night for the event with Joan Nestle and Cheryl Clarke. This evening, I'll be watching the US election returns with my family. I am hoping for good news, but I know regardless of what happens, there is a community around Sinister Wisdom that will support, energize, and sustain us all. Thank you for being a part of that community.

I look forward to seeing and talking with you next Tuesday night!

In sisterhood,

Julie

Pinpointing the Visual in Writing for the Stage and Screen
A Sinister Wisdom Writer’s Workshop with Alexis Clements
Saturday, December 5th, 12PM EST

What the audience sees when watching a film or a play is sometimes even more important than the words they hear. But it's not always easy to balance dialogue, action, and visuals. In this workshop we'll do a few exercises to explore your ideas for the stage and screen through the visuals. The workshop will be led by writer and filmmaker Alexis Clements. A guest editor of Sinister Wisdom 101: Variations, Alexis has over a decade of experience writing for the stage and in the fall of 2019, she premiered her first film, a feature-length documentary about LGBTQ+ women's spaces and communities.
