✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 Happy Black History Month! ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

Celebrating, honoring, and remembering the impact and legacy of Black queer women is a year-round task, especially in the face of racist and heteropatriarchal structures that seek to diminish their roles and existence. Sinister Wisdom is a multicultural literary journal for a reason; Black queer women's voices must be at the table because far too often they are not.

This February, Sinister Wisdom is uplifting our previous publications that celebrate Black Lesbians, some beloved Sapphic Classics by Cheryl Clarke and Pat Parker, and promoting an upcoming issue that centers the voices and art of African queer and trans women!
Sinister Wisdom 107: Black Lesbians—We Are the Revolution!

Curated and edited by JP Howard and Amber Atiya, Sinister Wisdom 107: Black Lesbians—We Are the Revolution! lifts up the voices of African-American lesbians for us all to hear, see, and know. The creative work in Sinister Wisdom 107: Black Lesbians—We Are the Revolution! gathers together new writing by an array of emerging and established black lesbian and queer women writers.

Check out this interview about issue 107 with JP Howard for Ms. Magazine! You can purchase Black Lesbians—We Are the Revolution! here.
Sinister Wisdom is now accepting submissions of writing and visual art for BLACK RAINBOW: A Special Issue on Lesbian, Queer, and Trans-identified Women from Africa and First Generation Africans in the Diaspora, edited by Sokari Ekine and Cheryl Clarke.

The Editors welcome essays, personal narratives, short fiction, poetry, biography/autobiography, mixed-genre, black and white photography, criticism, theory and other pieces which “complicate [the] single story” of who is “African.” [Jin Hawritaworn. Blurb. Queer African Reader. 2013.] Read more about the issue and how to submit here!

In January 2014, Sinister Wisdom and A Midsummer Night’s Press published Living as a Lesbian, a collection of poetry by Cheryl Clarke.

In 1986, Living as a Lesbian captured the vitality and volatility of the lesbian world; today, in a world both changed and unchanged, Clarke’s poems continue to illuminate our lives and make new meanings for Living as a Lesbian.

Happy Birthday to Audre Lorde! She would have turned 86 years old on February 18th, 2020. We'll be celebrating her solar return by honoring her impactful legacy on the lives of Black queer women.

Check out our intern Cassidy Scanlon's blog post about Audre Lorde's natal chart! It's an insightful read that explores Lorde's astrological motivations.
Poets Audre Lorder and Pat Parker first met in 1969; they began exchanging letters regularly five years later. Over the next fifteen years, Lorde and Parker shared ideas, advice, and confidences through the mail. They sent each other handwritten and typewritten letters and postcards often with inserted items including articles, money, and video tapes. Sister Love gathers this correspondence for readers to eavesdrop on Lorde and Parker discussing their work as writers as well as intmate details of their lives. Sister Love is a rare opportunity to glimpse inside the minds and friendship of two great twentieth century poets.

We love Sinister Wisdom 102: The Complete Works of Pat Parker, a collection of work by the legendary Black lesbian poet Pat Parker. This special issue features an introduction by poet and scholar Judy Grahn, an afterword by volume editor Julie R. Enszer, extensive notes on the poems, photographs of Parker and a bibliography.

We are selling a special cloth-bound edition of this collection. This is a limited release of only 200 copies and won't be available again after they are sold out!
