Dear Sisters,

It has been a long winter of mail struggles at Sinister Wisdom; I appreciate your patience and forbearance through it all. At the end of this note, I will write a bit more about the plan for EVERY SUBSCRIBER to receive their copy of Sinister Wisdom 119: To Be a Jewish Dyke in the 21st Century, but first I want to tell you about all of the goodness that is coming your way in the spring issue of Sinister Wisdom, Sinister Wisdom 120: Asian Lesbians.

Sinister Wisdom 120: Asian Lesbians

Sinister Wisdom 120: Asian Lesbians is the largest issue of Sinister Wisdom I have ever published (and possibly the largest issue ever). Expertly edited by the wonderful Vi Khi Nao and with contributors from around the world, this issue is a fantastic read that explores lesbian life and identity through the lens of "Asian." It is going in the mail this week and I could not be more thrilled to be sharing it with you.

Editor Vi Khi Nao writes about the issue: it "is designed to be highly ambitious, all-encompassing and inclusive, tender and provocative, experimental and cliché, fragile and resilient, vulnerable and hardcore, dynamic and demonstrative, embarrassing and awkward, perfect and incomplete, tantalizing and boring, garrulous and reticent, overwhelming and microscopic, cosmic and delirious, emotional and cephalic, erotic and mundane, and mostly Asian and female and queer and specific, just for you. I want this anthology to make you feel less isolated in your desire. To experience the beauty and vulnerability and depth of talent from all over the world and to know that your art, your desire, your Asianness has a home and is validated."

The cover features the amazing artwork "Spring Blossoms" by Ayirani Balachanthiran. I invite you to take a peek at the amazing cover by clicking here. Subscribers should start receiving this issue at the end of March and copies will continue to arrive throughout the month of April. Not a subscriber? You can order Sinister Wisdom 120 Asian Lesbians as a single issue today or
subscribe to Sinister Wisdom and receive a full year of the best lesbian literary and arts journal starting with Sinister Wisdom 120: Asian Lesbians.

On-Going Mail Drama

As I said above, the intention is for everyone who is a subscriber to Sinister Wisdom to receive their copy of Sinister Wisdom 119: To Be a Jewish Dyke in the 21st Century. In the mailing for Sinister Wisdom 120: Asian Lesbians, I ask subscribers who have NOT received Sinister Wisdom 119: To Be a Jewish Dyke in the 21st Century to email sinisterwisdom@gmail.com and let me know to send them a replacement issue. Likely, I will have to do a reprint of Sinister Wisdom 119: To Be a Jewish Dyke in the 21st Century to fulfill these replacement requests. I will update subscribers missing the issue who notify me with the timeline for replacement. PLEASE do not email me until you receive your copy of Sinister Wisdom 120: Asian Lesbians. Copies are still being delivered and I hope more will be delivered over the next few weeks. Fielding all of the emails about these missing copies has been overwhelming. I ask you to please wait to email me about the issue when you have Sinister Wisdom 120: Asian Lesbians in hand. At that point, I'll build a list for replacement and work through the process as quickly as humanly possible.

Thank you!

As always, thank you so much for your support of Sinister Wisdom! I am particularly grateful to the amazing women (and a few men and lots of people who reject the gender binary!) who have stepped up to support the work in the past year with additional gifts of support to the journal, time to work on various projects, and general good spirits during this pandemic time. Sinister Wisdom is growing as a journal with new subscribers, gift subscriptions from generous subscribers, and monthly sustainers increasing every month. (And if you love these periodic letters from me via email, you get more with your monthly gifts to Sinister Wisdom!) Thank you for your support. Please feel free to join this great group of supporters! Also thank you to our wonderful Sinister Wisdom intern, Juno, who has done a tone of work this semester - and to all of our volunteers, particularly Casey and Shromona and Sara who have stepped up to help with online events. I appreciate you all.

You can subscribe to Sinister Wisdom online here, or mail a check to Sinister Wisdom, 2333 McIntosh Rd, Dover, FL 33527. You can donate here or make a donation by check as well. Monthly sustainers can join here. If you want to volunteer, great! Send me an email - it will take a week or two for me to get back to you most likely! Things are busy (and I am working a paid jobs as well!)

Thank you all for making Sinister Wisdom a meaningful community organization during this time in our lives.

In sisterhood,

Julie

Writing the Fantastical: A Sinister Wisdom Generative Fiction Workshop

with Stephanie Andrea Allen
Saturday, April 10th, 2021 12pm ET

The purpose of this workshop is to help lesbian and queer writers generate ideas for fiction writing, including long and short form stories. Writers will read and discuss one or two stories, (circulated before the workshop), and spend time generating ideas from writing prompts. While writers may write in whatever genre they choose, the workshop will focus on speculative fiction by exploring the ways in which the quotidian might inspire the fantastical. Stephanie Andrea Allen, Ph.D. is a Black lesbian writer, scholar, and publisher. Her work can be found in various online and print publications, and her collection of speculative short fiction, How to Dispatch a Human: Stories and Suggestions, is forthcoming March 2021 from BLF Press.
Coming Back to Your Senses: Writing with Awareness
A Sinister Wisdom Writer’s Workshop with Nickole Brown
Saturday, May 8th, 12PM EST
With so much of our lives spent in the disembodied world online, this poetry intensive will focus on reconnecting you to your senses, encouraging greater awareness of yourself and your environment, and strengthening your poems by helping them sing with the texture of the well-observed world. Through a combination of close-readings of writers both old and new, generative exercises, and traditional workshops, this generative session will help writers refresh their senses and descriptive powers through a deep practice of awareness and an unflinching dedication to scrubbing away one’s preconceived notions of a thing in order to see it anew.
Nickole Brown received her MFA from the Vermont College, studied literature at Oxford University, and was the editorial assistant for the late Hunter S. Thompson. She worked at Sarabande Books for ten years. She’s the author of Sister, first published in 2007 with a new edition reissued in 2018. Her second book, Fanny Says (BOA Editions), won the Weatherford Award for Appalachian Poetry in 2015. The audiobook of that collection became available in 2017. Currently, she teaches at the Sewanee School of Letters MFA Program and the Great Smokies Writing Program at UNCA. She lives with her wife, poet Jessica Jacobs, in Asheville, NC, where she volunteers at two different animal sanctuaries. A chapbook about those animals called To Those Who Were Our First Gods won the 2018 Rattle Chapbook Prize, and a long sequence called The Donkey Elegies was published as a chapbook by Sibling Rivalry Press in 2020.
All About Love: The Art of Crafting Love Poetry
A Sinister Wisdom Writer’s Workshop with Marlee Miller
Saturday, June 5th,12pm EST

This workshop will focus on the age-old tradition of crafting love poems. People have written extensively about love since the beginning of time. So how do we write about a subject in a way that resonates if it’s the most popular one being explored by artists in any medium? In this workshop, we will do exercises that respond to the different experiences and sensations associated with love in all the various forms it comes in. In many ways, the English language is limited in its vocabulary for all the different types of love that exist. Whether it be platonic, romantic, familial, or even a love one might have for a physical place...that’s where our writing comes in. This workshop will be led by Marlee Miller. She is a writer and performance artist who draws inspiration for her work from love, dreams, social justice, mental illness, and the process of exploring identity. Marlee is a VONA (Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation) alum and her love poems have appeared in Issue 117 of Sinister Wisdom. Link to Marlee’s Website: https://www.marleemilart.com
