Sinister Wisdom 114: A Generous Spirit Selected Work by Beth Brant is a collection of writing by Mohawk lesbian poet, essayist, and activist Beth Brant. During her life, Brant’s work gave voice to an often unacknowledged Two-Spirit identity, and today, her words represent continued strength, growth, and connection in the face of deep suffering. A Generous Spirit is Brant’s portrait of survival and empathy at the intersection of Native American and lesbian experience.

Sinister Wisdom 114: A Generous Spirit Selected Work by Beth Brant is out now! Most subscribers along with those of you who pre-ordered individual copies should receive your copy this month. If you do not have a copy in your hands after October 31st, send me an email and I will investigate and ensure that you receive a copy as soon as possible.

If you’re not a subscriber, there’s still time to get a copy of Sinister Wisdom 114: A Generous Spirit Selected Work by Beth Brant in your hands! Order a single copy here or subscribe to Sinister Wisdom today for a year’s worth of issues!

This issue is very special to me because I knew Beth when I lived in Detroit, Michigan. She was an important writer that I met in my 20s who shaped my passion for and commitment to lesbian literature. I am thrilled to share this book of her wonderful work with the world.

In addition to publishing this new issue, it has been a busy month at Sinister Wisdom. I finished the annual accounting in preparation for filing our taxes as a non-profit organization. I'm working away on the January issue of Sinister Wisdom as well as planning for all four of our issues in 2020. The Sinister Wisdom fall fundraising campaign will launch in two weeks or so. I hope that you will think about making a gift to support Sinister Wisdom's publishing activities in 2020 over the next few weeks. I'll send out more information about our fall fundraising campaign via email and in the mail soon, but I just wanted to plant the seed: think about how you can support Sinister Wisdom as a lesbian publisher and organization in the next month.

I've been reading a fair bit as usual. I can recommend strong Carmen Maria Machado's new memoir, In the Dream House. This beautiful memoir grapples with power, control, and domestic violence in lesbian relationships. It's a challenging and wonderful book. Check it out.

Thank you for all of the wonderful ways you support Sinister Wisdom! I appreciate the chorus of voices within the pages of Sinister Wisdom and behind the scenes.

In sisterhood,

Julie R. Enszer, Editor and Publisher
