December is such a busy month for many Islanders, and it's no exception at the PEI MFRC. Amongst the hectic pace of the holiday season, please take some time to remember our soldiers serving overseas and their families who are missing them.

Send letters to deployed soldiers for free

It’s never easy for a soldier to be deployed overseas, far away from loved ones and familiar surroundings, but it is especially difficult over the holidays. Executive Director of the PEI branch of the Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC), Donna Earl, encourages Islanders to consider sending a card or letter to a Canadian soldier serving overseas this Christmas. Letters can be sent for free, assuming they fit within the guidelines established by Canada Post Free Mail Initiative and the Canadian Armed Forces.

Islanders can send letters to deployed troops free of charge (up to 500g) until December 31, 2015, at any Canada Post retail outlets. However, letters addressed to “Any Canadian Soldier” do not qualify for the free program, and would require postage.

If you do not know the name of a specific soldier, you can drop your letter off to the PEI MFRC, and we will address the letter for you.
Volunteer Meeting

Our monthly volunteer meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 2 at 6:30pm. The meeting will be held at the MFRC office at the DET, 88 Watts Ave., Charlottetown. We will be wrapping gifts for the holiday party and having a little Holiday Social!

PEI MFRC Hosting Virtual Book Club

The PEI Military Family Resource Centre offers virtual workshops to help connect Island military families with other military families.  These interactive webinars are free to attend and offer a range of information such as scholarships, PTSD, and budgeting.

In December, the PEI MFRC will start a new ongoing virtual book club, and on December 8 at 730PM, we will host an information session. Since many military families move around, a virtual book club allows members to maintain connections no matter their posting location. Even for military members and families who do not move around, a virtual book club is a great way to connect with other military families across the country.

For more information, including how to register, please visit the PEI MFRC website ( and check out the Events Calendar. You can also call the PEI MFRC office at 902.892.8999.
Cpt. Terry Hunter Shares His Story with PEI MFRC

Last month, PEI's own Captain Terry Hunter shared his deployment journey to the South of Sudan. We were honoured to have him share his experience with us. Here's what participant Joanna Church, MFS US Virtual Program Coordinator, said about the session:

On November 18, we had the pleasure of attending a virtual session with Captain Terry Hunter, brought to us by MFRC PEI Virtual Programming. Capt. Hunter was stationed in the South of the Sudan for a peacekeeping mission with the U.N. and shared a photo slide show with amazing stories and insights into the role they played to bring peace to a beautiful community.  He also shared with us how the MFRC Volunteer deployment packages were a lifeline to home and many gifts of education to the children that he met along the way. We laughed and even cried while hearing him recount stories of armed rebels, curious children, and somewhat challenging living conditions.
