Millions of Consumers Lack Credit History

Many U.S. consumers do not have a credit history or enough record of borrowing to establish a credit score, which is information that helps track the likelihood they will repay their debts and how much is owed to creditors.

One in every 10 adults, or 26 million people, do not have a credit history with one of the three nationwide consumer reporting agencies, according to data released by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau this week.

“A limited credit history can create real barriers for consumers looking to access the credit that is often so essential to meaningful opportunity—to get an education, start a business, or buy a house,” CFPB Director Richard Cordray said in a 
news release on the data. “Further, some of the most economically vulnerable consumers are more likely to be credit invisible.”

Decisions by creditors to issue loans and set interest rates are largely based on consumers’ credit reports, meaning consumers who have limited or nonexistent credit history face more challenges in getting credit, according to the CFPB.

The results of the report indicate that the problems that accompany having a limited credit history show significant differences across racial and ethnic groups, and lower-income consumers.

Community Involment

We offer programs & services in three major areas to help end child abuse and family violence.

CHILD ABUSE & FAMILY VIOLENCE
We address issues of family violence and how it affects both children and adults. Our staff helps families learn how to identify and deal with family violence while offering clients a protected venue for child visitations

PARENTING EDUCATION
Through parenting education, we address the conflicts that arise from stressful parenting situations and divorce.

ANGER MANAGEMENT
We address the issue of anger and explore alternative problem-solving skills, communication skills, the causes of anger, and reactions to anger as well as its aftereffects

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis (BGCM) is all about creating opportunities for children through after-school education. We serve nearly 4,000 members between the ages of 6 and 18 each year by providing the fun experiences and critical guidance kids need to build bright futures.
