October Is Respect Life Month

The Respect Life materials for 2015 are now available on the Archdiocesan web site. Remember, October is Respect Life month, but you may use any of the resources in the packet at any time. The theme for this year is: Respecting human life relating to beginning of life issues: Topics include abortion, birth control and assisted reproductive technologies.

Go to https://www.dbqarch.org/offices/respect-life/--this page includes links to both materials from the USCCB and the materials pertinent to the 2015 Archdiocesan Respect Life theme.

Online Masters Degree Program Resource

A resource you may find very valuable is a new list of colleges or universities, which offer a Master’s Degree online. There is both a document explaining the universities chosen and what kind of graduate programs are offered, as well as a chart with all the pertinent facts you will need in making a decision about any of these master’s programs.  The chart includes the location of the college or university, a contact number, the types of degrees offered, the cost per credit hour and if financial assistance is available.  Keep in mind that the programs included in this packet are from schools that offer a 100% online opportunity to get a MA. While the programs listed are a sampling of programs available, those on this list seem to be the most user-friendly for distance learners.  Follow this link to access this resource:  https://www.dbqarch.org/offices/catechetical-services/professional-development-resources/.  If you have any questions, please contact Julie Johnson, dbqrelcr@dbqarch.org.

Pastoral Leadership Study Day
Tuesday, October 27, 2015

The upcoming Pastoral Leadership Study Day will be a significant way for Faith Formation Leaders (as well as all other pastoral leadership) to follow-up on the April PLSD about the state of faith formation in the country.

Dr. Sean Reynolds will be the presenter. As a Diocesan Director of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Cincinnati, Sean has had to wrestle with current research that shows that Catholics are fairly much worse than any other group of Christians when it comes to passing the faith on to our Children. Dr. Reynolds will present a much  needed course of action that all parishes and schools need to take to ensure that our faith is passed on through the best means necessary - parents!

As a Faith Formation Leader, the way you partner with parents (who are the primary catechists of their children) will be central to ministry in the 21st century. This PLSD will give you the knowledge and some methods that are needed to move your parish/cluster ministry with parents to the next level. Click here to register.

Videos and Upcoming Zoom Meeting

The Offices of Adolescent Faith Formation and Catechetical Services are putting together some videos that will be available soon on the Archdiocesan website.  These deal with topics that we find people want to know more about, but they do not always want to call us (or it might not be during our office hours).  To that end, we would like some direction into topics that you would find helpful to have a short video to offer some guidance.  Also, we will be hosting a Zoom meeting for FFLs, particularly new & nearly new FFLs, but open to anyone, on Monday, October 19 at 10:00 AM.  This will be an opportunity to come together with out driving anywhere and ask questions or offer suggestions.  We will be especially ready to discuss any questions regarding the AFFR, but we are open to any and all topics.  Here is the information to join the meeting:
  • Topic: New & Nearly New FFLs
  • Time: Oct 19, 2015 10:00 AM (GMT-5:00) Central Time (US and Canada)
  • Join from PC, Mac, iOS or Android: https://zoom.us/j/682299740
  • Or join by phone:
    • +1 415 762 9988 (US Toll) or +1 646 568 7788 (US Toll)
    • Meeting ID: 682 299 740
You do not need to register to attend, and the session will be recorded and made available later.  If you need further information, please contact our offices.

Synod on Family in October

The Fourteenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops will take place on October 4–25, 2015, and will have a theme of "the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and in the contemporary world." It will "reflect further on the points discussed" at the 2014 Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops "so as to formulate appropriate pastoral guidelines" for the pastoral care of the person and the family. The 2014 Synod, called to define the status quaestionis (current situation) and to collect the participants experiences and proposals, can be understood as a preparation for the 2015 synod, but they are meant to "form a single organic unity.  For more information about the synod, please go to:  http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/2014-2015-synods-of-bishops-on-the-family.cfm. Please pray for the synod of bishops who will meet to discuss many very important issues facing families in today’s world.

FFL/CSA Book Club 2015-2016

The Church of Mercy:  A Vision for the Church
Collected from Pope Francis’s speeches, homilies, and papers presented during the first year of his papacy, The Church of Mercy is the first Vatican-authorized book detailing his vision for the Catholic Church. From how to be citizens of the world to answering God’s call for evangelization, Pope Francis's deep wisdom reminds us that the Church must move beyond its own walls and joyfully bring God's mercy wherever suffering, division, or injustice exists. Continue to read this excellent resource and let us know your thoughts!

Discussion Topics for Every Faith Formation Leader and His/Her Pastor
  • What are our goals/priorities for the coming year?
  • How can we best reach the parents of those under 18 in our parish/cluster/system?
  • How is Faith Formation fitting into the whole parish structure?

How Can We Help?

If it would ever be helpful for you to have a staff person from the Offices of Catechetical Services and Adolescent Faith Formation visit your parish to provide advice or assistance with programming, simply ask us and we will be happy to do what we can to meet your needs. We can help provide resources by brainstorming ways to improve your FF (RE) program or YM program, coaching you on how to find the most current resources, assisting in textbook selection, suggesting formational offerings for catechists or utilizing the Witness grant. If you would like assistance with implementing the K-8 religion curriculum, planning and implementing in-services, partnering with parents in catechesis or leading parent meetings, we can help. If you need advice on specific kinds of programming, we can discuss Totus Tuus, VLCFF, Confirmation training or even provide suggestions with dealing with your FFC. Just contact one of us.

The Age Old Question

If you haven’t actually asked it, you have probably thought of it:  What can I tell parents who send their children to our programs but do not come to Mass?  In a blog on the Patheos website, Jennifer Fitz has some things to say.  You may find some interesting ideas: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/jenniferfitz/2015/09/religious-ed-parents-who-dont-come-to-mass-what-to-say/.
