Steamship lines announce May GRI's

Ocean carriers have announced new general rate increases (GRIs) for eastbound cargo from Far East and Indian sub-continent origins to the US and Canada.  As a result of increases imposed by the steamship lines, previously quoted rates will be subject to the below GRIs.  Proposed GRIs are expected to take effect May 1, 2014 at the following rate levels:

For containers discharging at West Coast Ports and trucked to final destination:
•          $240 USD per 20’
•          $300 USD per 40’
•          $338 USD per 40’ HC
•          $380 USD per 45’
•          $6 USD w/m, min $6

All Other Destinations, including containers discharged at East Coast and U.S. Gulf ports and shipments via inland MLB intermodal service to any inland point in the U.S.:
•          $320 USD per 20’
•          $400 USD per 40’
•          $450 USD per 40’ HC
•          $506 USD per 45’
•          $8 USD w/m, min $8

Some ocean carriers have announced they will no longer provide chassis on door moves effective May 1, and we expect other steamship lines to follow suit.  Carriers no longer want to accept responsibility for lack of chassis and importers/consignees are now accountable for demurrage in case a suitable chassis cannot be located before free time expires.  Shippers who previously booked as steamship line door delivery to save cost should expect to pay an additional $75 per container in the future.
Port Update:

Vancouver:  Strike has ended and operations are back to normal.
Long Beach/Los Angeles The ILWU contract is set to expire on June 30th and negotiations will not begin until mid-May.
New York/New Jersey:  Severe winter weather revealed weaknesses in the existing port chassis model in which chassis operators, ocean carriers, and truckers all compete in the same chassis pool.  The average turn time increased from 5 to 10 days, due to weather, long wait times at the port, equipment availability, and warehouses fighting backlogs for delivery.
Southeastern US and Gulf ports Business as usual!  Savannah, Charleston, Atlanta, Memphis (as well as Kansas City and Chicago) adopted trucker-owned and “gray pool” chassis concepts a few years ago, and most will agree that the change has been effective.
Employee Spotlight - Danny Dixon

Danny Dixon was hired as Warehouse Supervisor the first day Future Forwarding Company opened its doors in Los Angeles in 2007, and continues to be a vital part of FFLAX operations.  Danny is responsible for shipping and receiving including unloading/loading trucks and containers, and special warehouse projects such as relabeling or repackaging.  He is always willing to go the extra mile to meet critical supply chain deadlines.  Danny enjoys spare time with friends and family, and loves to hunt and fish.  He married his high school sweetheart last year and is a devoted family man.  They have lots of pets including dogs, cats, snakes and turtles.  We guess he’s practicing his nurturing skills since he is looking forward to becoming a father in June.
