  THEME: The Fun Month

Shaul Farm garlicApril is the fun stuff month: Each April we add more items like seasoning, grains, vinegars, and oils to the bag. Why, you ask? Because - believe it or not - April is the hardest month of the year to get local produce in the Northeast. The storage crop supply is running low, compounded with it still being too early for most field crops. In fact, back in the day (think pilgrims) April was the month that starvation was a very real possibility.

The story behind the Shaul Farm garlic salt. First let us say: we heard you on the strong smell of the garlic powder and are now double bagging. This garlic salt is made with the same super strong garlic. Dave Shaul just started making garlic powder and salt this winter because he had way too much garlic. Rather than toss it, we said we would buy all the garlic powder he could make. And how! The Shaul family got SERIOUSLY in the garlic powder business. Bravo!

Sustainable Aqua Farm  NEW FARM ALERT    This week we are sending you product from Sustainable Aqua Farm, a brand new aquaponics farm in Berlin, NY. We are customer #2! Aquaponics is a system of aquaculture in which the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water. Frozen Kale

We think this frozen kale makes the best kale chips. Thaw in a big bowl of warm water (you can place this for a few minutes in the microwave), then drain and press using paper towels to remove excess moisture. Toss with a bit of oil and salt and place in oven at 250 degrees until crispy.  Or,  try lightly steaming or sautéing (with garlic, of course) and then chopping. The taste is mmm mmm good, and we still have some left in the freezer for unexpected company!
