2. Superintendent Message

Welcome to St. Cloud Area Schools. Whether you are a longtime member of our school community or new to our district, we are glad you’re part of the 742 family. Here, we care for one another and nurture the unique gifts of each student. We are committed to ensuring your child is successful academically and well prepared for life in a global society.

At St. Cloud Area Schools, students enjoy the widest variety of options and opportunities available in central Minnesota. We are proud to offer K-12 Spanish and Chinese Language Immersion and an elementary Talent Development program. These early learning pathways lead to middle-level honors programming, over 20 Advanced Placement courses and more than 20 College in the Schools classes for grades 9-12. We provide a rigorous, relevant high school education through Career and College Pathways programs. Students can explore career options in partnership with local employers or concentrate in an area of their choice, graduating with a certification in the business, healthcare, food service or trades industry.

We take great pride in our music and fine arts programs and the wide range of activities available beginning in middle school. Leaders of tomorrow require a well-rounded education, and we offer opportunities in visual, media and theater arts, dance, band, orchestra and choir. Our athletic and activities programs are robust, and we encourage every student to join one or more extracurricular opportunity.

St. Cloud Area Schools provides unparalleled global learning experiences, from multiple languages to innovative technology, preparing students with the skills employers—and the future—demand. We also believe that the greatest level of individual success is achieved through shared ownership, and we are committed to partnering with families and community to provide the highest quality education for our students.

I invite you to join me this year at one of my monthly Coffee and Conversations, school events, or a community gathering. Let’s get to know one another! I also encourage you to take a personal tour of our schools to see all that we have to offer.

We are 742 Together!

Dr. Laurie Putnam
Superintendent, St. Cloud Area School District 742

School Board Primary Election

Eight candidates have filed for three at-large school board seats. District 742 has opted into a primary election system which is required when the number of candidates is more than twice the number of open seats. The primary election will reduce the number of candidates to six, whose names will then be placed on the general election ballot on November 8, 2022.

Staff Spotlight: Brent Petermeier and Nathan Schutz

Madison Elementary School has a dynamic duo, Brent Petermeier and Nathan Schutz. Both are behavioral support specialists (BSS) which means they modify teaching styles to provide intervention for students with significant social, emotional and/or behavioral needs. They work together in partnership with teachers to provide support to specialized instruction for students with individual education plans.

Petermeier and Schutz have been together as a team for the past three years. Petermeier started in the district five years ago as a paraeducator and grabbed the opportunity at the open BSS position. He has a passion for education. It’s “in his blood.” Both his parents and brothers are educators as well as his grandparents on both sides. Even his wife is a teacher.

“I’m very much the opposite,” says Schutz. “I had no intention of ever becoming an educator. I was working in the group home industry which is primarily adults with disabilities. The company I was working for hit some financial hard times and I ended up getting laid off. Essentially, I needed a job. This [position] has been a great fit for me. I can’t see myself doing anything else from here on out in my career.”

Schutz admits he would not have imagined working in a school five years ago.

“Part of the reason why I believe that this has worked so great for me is because I work with such great people,” explains Schutz. “Brent … the two of us hit it off right away. We’ve made this thing work. I think we make a great team.”

Often the pair’s day consists of receiving radio calls from teachers or other support staff to assist with students who may need a break, need help with homework or are just struggling that day. Continue reading
