Welcome to our newsletter

Kia ora e hoa, our apologies – our earlier email had an incorrect subject line and a broken link our our latest jingles blog.

In this issue we look at some more jingles and take a quick tour of our television vault. We also highlight an impressive new scan of film from the 1920s and play back some of our favourite New Zealand music videos.

Jingles: the B Sides

Loxene Haircream advert.

In our previous issue we took a look at some of the nation’s most loved jingles from advertising. This time, we flicked through the back catalogue to find those that didn't quite stick in our collective memory – or if they did, we weren't happy about it.

Speaking of advertising, did you catch us on 1News? Imogen Wells took a quick trip to the television vault at Motutawa Avalon to mark 60 years since the first adverts went to air.

A New Scan of
'New Zealand News and Views'

Construction of the T&G Building.
Our latest ‘new scan’ goes to dizzying heights! New Zealand News and Views (1928) features scenes from around the country, including the construction of the T&G Building on Lambton Quay, Wellington. Those afraid of heights may want to avoid this footage of workers on the multi-storey building – as might workplace health and safety advocates! This short blog compares our latest scan of this title with an earlier version, and explains why it’s no longer in black and white.

Playback – Te Rongotuaruatanga

We’ve worked with the National Library for some of their upcoming events:

  • Mīharo Wonder Whānau Day – watch some delightful Fred O’Neill screenings and explore the fantastic Mīharo Wonder exhibition – Saturday 1 May.
  • Tea and Tours – see our Wellington As We Were compilation and have a cup of tea and a scone – Thursday 6 May.

Rewi’s Last Stand is screening at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth – Sunday 2 May.

  • Some of the most popular items on our online catalogue this past month include this 1925 tour through the Buller Gorge and a swimsuit show at Caroline Bay in 1968.
  • Congratulations to Scott from Christchurch who won our DVD prize pack in the previous issue. The answer: Hector was riding a rollercoaster.
